Christmas for the Animals

by Ginny on December 23, 2011

This afternoon, as Beatrix and I sat stringing cranberries, Jonny said to her, “Bea, we’re having Christmas for the animals!”
Her reply:  “Yeah, I love that…..so much.”

This is our second year celebrating Christmas for the animals, with our focus this year being our little birdie friends (but of course Trudy got a new toy, and a couple of nice bones from our local butcher.)  We made an extra big mess because anything involving children, peanut butter and birdseed is going to be messy.  We coated empty toilet paper rolls in natural peanut butter and then rolled them in sunflower seeds and then placed them on tree branches.  I also purchased a couple of pounds of fresh suet from the butcher to melt and make into suet cakes.  I added crunchy peanut butter, raisins, pecans pieces, and sunflower seeds to the melted suet and then poured it into foil muffin cups.  I also made one big sheet of it to cut up and add to our suet feeder.  Everyone strung popcorn and cranberries as well.
We distributed our treats among the trees surrounding the garden.  Larkspur pulled a handful of carrots “for the bunnies” and searched the woods carefully for the perfect spot to leave the offering.

I love Christmas for the animals so much too.

And, in case I am not back before Christmas:  Merry Christmas to all of you!

p.s.  Small Things is making a little move sometime in the next couple of days.  So, if you try to visit and can’t find me, don’t worry.  Give it a few more minutes (or maybe a bit more than that) and try again.  You won’t have to change anything on your end.  Hopefully this move will put a stop to the problems that some of you have been having connecting.  I am really excited about my new space.  Thanks friends!

There is a great little book called The Cobweb Christmas, that is one of our absolute favorites. In the story, it describes how this old lady makes a special treat for each and every animal of the forrest, as well as the village children. It is a lovely book, and your Christmas for the Animals sounds just as lovely!

Love Bea's hari up like that and love how both girls are traipsing in the brush in dresses. Such a sweet thing to make for the animals. Have you spotted any takers?

Ginny, I just have to tell you (since I know you fret about it when your girls' hair is messy) that I noticed Bea's perfectly pig-tailed hair in these photos! :)

Merry Christmas!

Thank you for noticing! It's so rare that she will keep her ponytail holders in!
