I think I have mentioned before that I volunteer for a local women’s shelter, teaching a knitting class. The class actually started out as a crocheting class and I was recruited to help out, despite the fact that my crocheting skills are pretty limited (volunteers are scarce!) A few months in and I am now the only instructor, so the class is supposed to switch gears from crocheting to knitting. The problem is that I don’t have materials to teach the class with and right now the shelter doesn’t have the funds to buy them. I would really love to be able to purchase about ten size 8, 16 inch circular knitting needles from Knit Picks along with some basic cotton and wool yarn for my class, so I have a consistent set of supplies to teach with. I am also hoping to get donations from other knitters’ stashes: needles of all sizes and cotton or wool yarn to have on hand for the women as they progress.
So what I am wondering is if any of you knitters out there have anything you’d like to donate? I am digging through my own stash, would you do the same? I assure you this is a good cause. This shelter (and please visit their website if you’d like to learn more) does such great things for these ladies, really helping them to get on their feet and learn to support themselves and their children. And the ladies in the program: I am in love with all of them. Their stories will break your heart, but their courage and determination will turn around and give you strength. If any of you would like to donate either supplies or some money, please email me, or leave a comment here and I will contact you. Donations are tax deductible. Thanks so much!
(This is a sweater I started for Beatrix, and now I believe that it will be too big even for Larkspur! Oh well, better too big than too small!)
