~Two of my favorite things are knitting and reading and I love sharing my projects and current reads here. I would love for you to join me each month and share what you are knitting (or crocheting) and reading too! Post your photo(s) on your blog or on Instagram (#yarnalong) and then share a link below to either your blog or Instagram post!~ (This post contains affiliate links.)
I’m sorry to be posting late again! I overscheduled myself yesterday and was completely wiped out after having both a dentist appointment and a mammogram. This was our first week with everyone back to homeschooling as well, so it’s been a little hectic and I’m exhausted. We are trying to sort out schedules and times for everyone to have a computer when needed. I spent my free time over the weekend making daily class checklists for my four oldest kids and completely neglected to meal plan, so that has added to the stress this week. I just don’t have the skills to “wing it” in the kitchen. I am going to have to be really disciplined and stay on top of meal planning in the future because it really stinks to get through everyone’s lessons only to realize I have no idea what we are having for dinner.
I have been reading and knitting-cannot neglect those two or I will lose my mind, even if my knitting doesn’t amount to much lately. I finished reading Growth of the Soil. I liked it but didn’t love it. My expectations were high so that probably contributed to my feelings toward it. It was good, and I really enjoyed reading it, but it won’t stay with me in the way that many of my favorite books have. I also read Murder on the Orient Express in August. I really liked that one! It’s only the second Agatha Christie that I have read, but I think I’ll read more. I haven’t read many mysteries as an adult, but I think it’s just that I need to find the right ones. I don’t want anything with too much excitement. I enjoyed The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins but that is the only mystery that I can remember reading in the last decade other than And Then There Were None. Now I’m reading Sense and Sensibility. Sometimes I just need to read something delightful.
Giuseppe (my kitten) has mostly abandoned me in favor of Seth and his room, but he magically appears anytime I get out my knitting. I cast on a new project a few days ago, a Heartwood Cape. It was nearly impossible and I finally had to shut Giuseppe out of my bedroom. I knit this cape for Beatrix years ago and have always planned to knit another. I’m still working on my Antarktis shawl as well, getting close to finishing but adding extra rows to use up more of my yarn.

I hate that feeling of not having a plan for dinner as the dinner hour draws near, and I’m sure the stress is only multiplied with a larger household! Whenever I don’t meal plan, I regret it all week long. I have a couple of “oh crap” meals that I try to always have the ingredients on hand for, and they usually feature the instant pot. One is just frozen chicken breast and a jar of salsa (spices optional) cooked on high in the IP for 20ish minutes so that it’s shredable, then using that for rice bowls or tacos. It has saved my bacon many times. But I can only lean on that so often before the family starts complaining. ?

I always feel like one area of my life is totally organized…at the expense of another. It seems I’ll never have everything working in harmony. Oh, well.
As an avid reader of mysteries (and avoider of intense ones) I can recommend most of the “Golden Age” authors. Josephine Tey, Dorothy Sayers, and Ngaio Marsh are my three favorite.

My cat holly eats my yarn so everything is in a project bag to deter her. I don’t like cooking at all and wish I had a personal chef! If only!

I can’t imagine how busy you are! I know the feeling about dinner and NO PLAN! How about a huge pot of chili that can last 2 days? Or layered beans, rice, veggies, onions and corn tortillas? Or split pea soup with muffins. Maybe these ideas might help. If you give me all your dietary needs maybe I can come with ideas. I love to cook. When I’m stressed I cook if I have ingredients around. Good luck!

Meal planning is my nemesis! I’m not very good without recipes and a plan. Some people are super creative in the kitchen – I’m not one of them.
Onwards and upwards with the school year! We started our homeschooling rhythm last week and, well… I’m glad there’s a lot of flexibility.
Thanks for the linkup!
