This morning I woke to a very long to-do list and a nasty cold. Just as I sat down to get started with my computer tasks, Silas asked me to take him for a walk. My first instinct was to tell him that I couldn’t. I had limited time and much to do. Of course, I knew that would have been the wrong choice. So I took him for a long walk and we admired mushrooms and leaves and moss during what felt like very important moments; time well spent without a doubt. Why is it hard to say, “Yes,” to begin with?
Last week I realized that we hadn’t been to Big Meadows in more than two years. Mabel had never been at all, and we used to go so frequently! In recent years we always seem to be waiting for a “good time” to fit these things in, and I realize that there will likely never be one. Doing one thing will always mean not doing something else. I think most of us realize this, and it’s just a matter of setting priorities and accepting the consequences. So in the midst of a hectic week, we dropped everything for an afternoon and drove to Big Meadows (the older boys stayed home, the girls’ friend Istra came along). It was the most peace I’ve felt in awhile. I love everything about that trip including the drive there. (Well, the drive home not so much.) I’m so glad we went and I’m determined not to let another two years or more pass before we return.
At some point on the meadow I realized that everyone was wearing a hat that I had knit! They were mostly cooperative about letting me get a photo to document my happy knitter’s moment. Here are links for everyone’s knits, youngest to oldest: Mabel’s bonnet, scarf, and cardigan. Job’s hat. I can’t find any notes on Silas’ hat. I think I improvised it. Beatrix’s hat and shawl. Istra’s hat. Larkspur’s hat (her hand knitted fingerless mitts were a gift and I can’t remember the pattern name.) My shawl. Jonny’s hat.
p.s. I’ve got a big shop update planned for Friday. There will be naturally dyed yarn, scarves, swaddles, and more!!! Lots of beautiful fall colors. I’ll update at 10 a.m. ET.

You all look so content. Love your line, “Why is it so had to say, ‘Yes,’ to begin with?” I don’t know, but it is. But when I do, it is usually so worth it. So cool to see your knitting keeping you all warm.

Lovely. Please, tell us how you were able to be so close to that young buck without frightening it away.

These photos are all so beautiful and cozy. What a wonderful gathering of so many of your handmade knits!
Big Meadows looks like a great place to be outside and explore. And you are right, it is so easy to let time go by and not enjoy the things that truly make us happy. Intentional prioritizing is so important in the midst of these busy, hectic days.

Where is the cat “doll” from? My girls have worn out their stuffed animal cats and that one looks like it might be a bit more durable. ?
