~Two of my favorite things are knitting and reading and I love sharing my projects and current reads here. I would love for you to join me each month and share what you are knitting (or crocheting) and reading too! Post your photo(s) on your blog or on Instagram (#yarnalong) and then share a link below to either your blog or Instagram post!~ (this post contains affiliate links.)
I finished the body on my South Bay Sweater and I really love it. Then I tried picking up stitches for the neckband and that didn’t go so well. Jonny told me several times that it’s not going to be perfect. I corrected him. For now, I’ve abandoned the neck and I’m knitting the sleeves. I will revisit the neckband once they are finished.
The girls insisted that we immediately start reading Julie after we finished Julie of the Wolves. So we are reading both it and Strawberry Girl. We love them both!
I finished reading China Court, and loved how it ended. Now I’m reading Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking. From a young age, I felt that the fact that I find it draining to be in large groups, along with my inability to make small talk (that isn’t awkward and embarrassing) was the result of some sort of a deficit, something that needed fixing. I longed to be the chatty, clever girl. Over the years I have learned to accept myself for who I am, and I recognize that I am not defective. I am just an introvert, and that’s alright. This book is both encouraging and validating.

I loved the Strawberry Girl! I think I read it two or three times – borrowed from the library. What a great memory.

Hello,
I’ve read Susan Cain’s Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can’t Stop Talking also. Highly recommended for introverts, and those that want to understand their beloved introverts. I used to think there was something fundamentally ‘wrong’ with me because I wasn’t one of those bubbly types. Now I just realize I’m an introvert, and introverts have their own special gifts (though there are apparently fewer of us than extroverts, making us seem different – I forget the statistic).
I’ll have to check out Rumer Godden’s China Court – I just finished In This House of Brede (also by Rumer Godden) and enjoyed it. I had to laugh out loud at this part:
“Sister! Sister! Sister! I feel as though I am being wiped out.”
That’s the idea, Sister Louise replied smugly.
“Mother Superior, may I have your permission to murder Sister Louise?”
(An excerpt from Rumer Godden’s In This House of Brede. Going off of memory, so I hope I got that right…)
Now I’m on my second reading of Peace Like a River. I’d forgotten how good it was…
God bless!
Melisa

I am an introvert. Hate being in crowds and around people I do not know. I am reading “Adventures Of The North Woods ” 10 book series. The girls may like these books.

I LOOOOOVE China Court!! I so love seeing other people mention because I think it’s so under-read/underrated! The first time I read it, I was so confused about the complicated family tree, and had to constantly turn back to her family tree in the front… second time was just so much fun. There’s something lovely and atmospheric about the whole book. It totally inspired me to try planting a cottage English garden (and of course, wish I could visit Cornwall…someday!).
Ginny says
I definitely think a second reading is in order someday! I spent the first half of the book confused, and doing a lot of flipping to the family tree as well. But I loved it nonetheless! Atmospheric is a very good word for it. 🙂

I’m a half way introvert but gave birth to two introverts (because I married an introvert). lovely knitting progress!!

I looked “Quiet” up on our library’s website, and it looks like the author has written a book for kids and teens who are introverts as well. I will be checking this book out! I often have trouble understanding my younger teen son’s need to ‘check out’ of social situations or not be able to interact well in conversations (at church or wherever). Maybe this will help me understand him better and for him to understand himself. He seems to be living in a house full of extroverts!
PS I just discovered your blog a few weeks ago, and I love it. You do a wonderful job of capturing the little moments of life that make up our days. Thank you.
Ginny says
I’m wondering if one of my teen sons might like the one for teens as well. I’m glad you found my blog!!! Thanks for your sweet comment!
Nicole Spring says
Ok, I need to read the introvert book. Just last weekend while at my mom’s birthday party I was angry with myself for not being able to make small talk (never have been) while watching everyone else chatting away.
Ginny says
It’s really hard! I end up blurting out lots of stupid stuff in situations like that!
Gwen says
Ginny, I would never have guessed you were an introvert. You don’t write like one. Yes, I totally understand what you are saying. I married a man that is quick witted and easily talks to everyone…and I’m the backward one. Although if you ask him, he said I found my voice. Ha! I’m hoping to snag one of your beautiful yarns tomorrow. Have a great rest of the week.
Ginny says
Oh yes, very much so! The internet is good at disguising it! 🙂

There are three books in the Julie series. The third book is written from the point of view of the wolves. You need to read all three to get the full story. I think I am an introvert, too. That’s why I love blogging so much. I can express my thoughts in a non-competitive atmosphere. Thanks for doing Yarn Along. I really enjoy it.
Ginny says
We definitely plan to read the third! I didn’t realize it was told from the point of view of the wolves. That sounds great!

I love Quiet. As a very loud extrovert married to an introvert and raising an introvert, I needed to understand how to relate to them and Quiet was so helpful.
