Silas is turning seven on Friday. (You can see him holding his seven fingers up in one of the photos. He’s got serious birthday brain right now!) We have big birthday plans for him, and I think I am ready as far as food and gifts go. I’ll talk more about that next week!
I spent last weekend working on a gift for Mabel. She turns two next month, and I want to finish a small quilt for her. Beatrix, Silas, and Job all received first birthday quilts that were collaborate efforts between me, Keats and Gabe, and while I did buy fabric intending to make one for Mabel’s first birthday, I never got around to it. I’m determined to have a quilt made in time for her second birthday. Last weekend, I started cutting fabric on Saturday and by Sunday afternoon I had a quilt top and back ready. I haven’t decided yet if I will turn it or bind it, but I’ve got a few weeks to finish. I chose gold as one of the main colors in honor of Sarah Harkins, one of my friends whom Mabel is named for. (It was one of her favorite colors). Mabel loves yellow too! Oh, and most of the fabrics were purchased at Hobby Lobby, though a few came from my stash, including scraps from Mabel’s 1st birthday dress.
p.s. Photos of that little chicken coop were mixed in with my quilt photos, so I thought I’d show you. That was a free Craigslist find! Folks had given backyard chickens a go, and decided it wasn’t for them. We got that sweet little coop complete with a solar operated door and three lovely golden comet hens. Our rooster, Wattles, and his two hens that survived our big predator attack a few months ago haven’t assimilated into our big flock well, so now they have a new spot to call their own. They are living within our goat pasture and will be able to free range there after they adjust to their new home.
p.p.s. Something new (for me) that I used while making the quilt top were these (affiliate link) sewing clips. So much easier than pins!

Yes to sewing clips!!!! They are a total game changer for my sewing. Also, fabric glue!
I use it when hemming or altering tricky/slippery material or tiny hems. I glue it in place first to keep it from shifting while I sew it.

I saw your quilt on Instagram yesterday and now here on your blog today. It looks wonderful – similar to some that my Mother’s mother made way back in the day. Nothing fancy like some you see in today’s quilting magazines but nice, sturdy, practical and useful. Many of today’s quilts that I see don’t look like anyone should sleep on or under them! Keep up the good work.

One of my many goals is to make a quilt for each of my daughters. I even have had the batting bought for years and have just never started! Do you have a book or website you’ve used to help explain how to finish the outside edges?? I don’t even know the correct terms, haha!

I used a book called, My First Quilt Book Or It Should Be. I’ve made two now and everything is in that great book!

The first simple quilt I made, I followed instructions in a book called Bend the Rules Sewing, by Amy Karol. 🙂

I too am making a quilt for my soon to be 2-year old ( only 5 weeks away)! I’m hoping to start it after I make my sons ballet bag but with #4 due in four weeks I’m not sure how much I will get done before hand. ?
Helen says
Lovely quilt. Will you hand quilt or machine quilt? I would love to give a quilt like you are making a try.
Ginny says
I will most likely machine quilt straight lines down the existing seams. I believe it’s called “stitch in the ditch.” 🙂

I do love the photos and just have to ask whose fingers are sprouting out of your head – Bea or Job?
Ginny says
Ha! That is Beatrix giving me bunny ears!

Now, why doesn’t that surprise me!

I love the colors you chose for the quilt. So bright and cheery!
My youngest daughter turns 4 next month and I’ve been thinking of making her a quilt for her soon-to-be-coming big girl bed. You’ve inspired me to really give it a go! 😉
