This evening, after Jonny and I went for a long walk in the woods, I started baking for tomorrow. We are hosting two families of friends and there will be more than 20 of us all together, adults being outnumbered by children nearly 3 to 1. I had forgotten how much I enjoy preparing Thanksgiving dinner (I’m not a huge fan of cooking in general.) I started with pies: Amish apple pie and milk custard from this cookbook. Both are longtime favorites. Then I made a basic pumpkin pie. We also did some prep for tomorrow. I’m making maple scented sweet potatoes, collard greens, black eyed peas, cranberry sauce, and a grain free stuffing made with turnips, sweet potatoes, sausage and sage. I’m not making a turkey because my family doesn’t really love turkey. Instead I’m opting for something much easier: crock pot barbecue pork. I’ll start it before we go to bed and it will be ready in the morning. Our friends are bringing a roast goose!! I made a buttery, yeasted, overnight roll dough and it is waiting in the fridge. It will be hard for me to resist those tomorrow, but I think I will.
Tonight, while I was baking and prepping, our neighbors (the family who bought our old house and are walking distance from our new one) stopped in for a game of Catan with some of the kids and everything felt so warm and cozy as we just enjoyed being together. It’s nice to have friends so close. I am absolutely overwhelmed with all that we have to be thankful for this year, and every year. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you who will be celebrating with us.

Love the pictures of your daughter- she looks a lot like you (at least on the pictures). Love the skirt she’s wearing and the huge amount of happiness that she radiates.
Hope you have a wonderful day.
