~ Two of my favorite things are knitting and reading and I love sharing my projects and current reads here. I would love for you to join me every Wednesday to share a single photo of what you are knitting (or crocheting) and reading too! Share your photo on your blog, on Instagram (#yarnalong), or on Flickr. Leave a link below to share your photo with the rest of us!~
I can’t handle not having a shawl on the needles, so I started a new one this week. I saved myself a few of my purple skeins of sport weight wool to use with some undyed ones, and I really love how this yarn is knitting up.
I’m still reading The Winthrop Woman. When the author described what it was like for some of the puritans landing in America, I felt pretty horrified. I wouldn’t have been brave enough for that scene. Everyone sick, no food, poor housing, etc.
I bought a copy of Honey for a Teen’s Heart and need to spend some time with it this week making a reading list for Keats and Gabe. They are both “out” of books to read. I have the version of this book geared towards younger children and really like it. I hope I can find some books that Keats and Gabe will be interested in reading….

Hi Ginny,
Have your boys read the Hornblower series? I have a voracious reader (14 year old boy) who is constantly out of books. Last summer he read all of that series. This summer he read The Count of Monte Cristo and now is devouring some books from his sister’s 8th grade engl list- by Howard Pyle- Men of Iron he read last night.
Hope you find some good ones.

Thanks for the book recommendation- “The Winthrop Woman”. My oldest is spending her summer after graduating as a History/Lit major and Costume minor at the Plimoth Plantation working on Colonial garments. Her first week she demo’d knitting colonial garters to visitors! In the Fall she will be dressed as a Colonial Woman at a museum where she works, also sewing her garments by hand in spare moments between being a guide. Your book sounds like a read that would stretch her concept of how it was to be a Puritan. I do love your blog- Thanks.

Hi Ginny, I recently found your blog, and enjoy reading it even though I am a retired Grama with no little ones nearby. I home schooled my twin sons and like you was always searching for books that would capture a boy’s interest. Do you have Jim Trelease’ book ‘The Read-Aloud Handbook’? It’s also a great reference for reading alone. And ‘Books Children Love’ by Wilson & Macaulay. Anything by the great British educator Charlotte Mason. You probably already know about them – they were very helpful to me. I so miss those days of reading when my boys were home. I can pass on other books as I remember them – if that would be helpful.

I loved Honey for a Woman’s Heart and am in the middle of Honey for a Child’s Heart. Honey for a Teen’s Heart will be next on my list! 🙂

Your new shawl is going to be very beautiful!! Glad to see the Honey for a Teen’s heart… I have a nine year old nephew and he is sort of chomping at the bit for bigger, longer books… but he is still nine and I’m having a hard time finding the right kinds for him. Happy Wednesday!

I took a break from shawl knitting and after one pair of socks and another pair on the needles, I’m happy to report I’m back at it full force! I’m in a one year reading challenge with my daughter, son and nephew. I think I’m losing but I’m excited to always be talking about books with any of them 🙂
