~ Two of my favorite things are knitting and reading (though not at the same time!), and the evidence of this often shows up in my photographs. I love seeing what other people are knitting and reading as well. So, what are you knitting or crocheting right now? What are you reading? Take a photo and share it either on your blog or on Flickr. Leave a link below to share your photo with the rest of us! ~
It’s been a slightly frustrating knitting week. I kind of wish I didn’t start this sweater for Job, bur rather had focused all my efforts on finishing Larkspur’s Leksak. I made a silly mistake (as in, I didn’t read the pattern directions) and ended up having to rip the yoke out just before I reached the point to divide for the sleeves. So what you see is my second attempt to pay attention to simple directions. I think the sweater is going to be really cute, so I am pushing forward despite the fact that Job really doesn’t need another sweater!
I think around half a dozen people have recommended Katy Bowman to me, so I purchased her book, Alignment Matters. Just reading her introduction has gotten me really excited! She makes sense. Maybe there’s hope for my poor bones?
I’m looking for my next fiction read. I need something HAPPY.

I’ve been wanting to get that book for a while (I’m such a cheapo though, so I haven’t bought it yet, no library). Knitting to me requires magical powers that produce objects of practical beauty. Three Men in a Boat made me laugh, James Herriots’ books are warm and funny, and I love the subtle humour of Pride and Prejudice. Oh, and of course you can’t go wrong with P.G Wodehouse, he’s gotten friends through hard times.

I make a lot of mistakes right now. I just ripped out 7 rows of a scarf! 🙂 But I am learing a lot from doing things over. Of course my projects aren’t as challanging as yours are. Can’t wait to see Job’s finished sweater.

I know! I am attempting a scarf, my first knitting project. I have started it about 12 times. :/ sigh! It is a lot of fun though. Practice, practice, practice.

I just read the new Mitford novel by Jan Karon, Somewhere Safe with Somebody Good. It was happy, easy, delightful, like all of those wonderful books!

Do you like mysteries? There are some cozy knitting mysteries (the first one isn’t, but the rest are). My hubby found them for me. They are also quick reads, which is kind of awesome to me right now. It is the Two Old Biddies series my Jill-Ayn Martin. I have so many fiction books I could recommend. I read all day for work so I pretty much only read fiction now. xx

a good fiction book is Harriet Beamer takes the Bus by Joyce Magnin.

Katy Bowman’s work has been a tremendous help to me . . . lots of fascinating and thought provoking concepts!

It’s no fun when knitting is frustrating, it’s suppose to be a zen activity so I’m hoping that for you from now on.

I ended up frogging a sweater last week after making a really horrid mistake, totally due to not paying attention late at night & then not realizing the mistake for many days. I can’t seem to cast back on for it. The sweater you picked for Job is such an adorable pattern–I hope you finish it. Babies can never have too many handknits. 🙂 xx

The lost art of keeping secrets by Eva Rice is a happy book.

have you read PEACE LIKE A RIVER by leif enger? it’s fiction and one of the best books i’ve read in many years. so, so good.

You HAVE to read something by George MacDonald. So beautiful and fantastical, with lots of sacramental imagery. I feel the echo of the Eucharist in everything he writes (and I’m pretty sure he was a Protestant pastor, but my perspective is Catholic, so…). Fairyland, nature, beautiful spirits, virtue, and happiness/joy for life are abundant in his works. I recommend Phantastes in particular.

Perfect! I’m expecting a George MacDonald in the mail today! Actually, to read to my kids. The Light Princess… !!! 🙂

I am dealing with frustrating knitting also. Something that should be simple is giving me fits. I don’t know whether it is me or the pattern. Keep with it. I am sure you will like the sweater when it is finished. Have you tried reading The Hot Flash Club by Nancy Thayer. You aren’t in that age in life yet, but this is quite funny and enjoyable.

Did you read the Rosie Project? It is VERY funny and interesting!

Hi, Ginny! I thought I might offer a happy fiction suggestion? Have you heard of the Lumby Series by Gail Fraser? It is a fun, light, and quirky series set in a little town complete with a beautiful old monastery, the efforts to renovate an even older monastery into a B&B, a beekeeper (that shows up toward the end of the series), country living, and some colorful, quirky townsfolk. There are currently five books with a sixth one coming soon. The first book is entitled The Lumby Lines. I have really enjoyed the series and thought you might, too! And I love the color of Job’s new sweater! Baby sweaters are really the most fun! 🙂

That book looks really good- I hope you find some healing thru this.
I have practiced Yoga for 5 years- I can not live with out it. Its and elixir for my body as well as my mood….hint hint.

Sorry you had to frog Ginny! The alignment book looks fascinating. Unfortunately, I don’t have a suggestion for a happy fiction book.
Sarah says
That sweater is going to be so cute! Maybe I should look into that book… I know very little about alignment but have been slowly convinced I ought to!

I’ve been having a frustrating knitting week as well. I messed up on my hat, ripped it back, started again. And then realized I overlooked a very simple part of the pattern and I just ripped it back again. It’s a pattern that requires some attention which makes it challenging to work on during daily life. 🙂 But today I’m showing the sweater I finished for Bracken’s birthday, his “blueberry blue” sweater (his very favorite color.) It’s my second sweater and I’m glad I got it done in time. Here’s to a smoother-sailing knitting week for both of us. 🙂
karen says
have you tried yoga? like baby simple beginner yoga? I find that helps a lot. Sorry about the ripping and simple directions….hopefully you are beyond the mistakes and are sailing through your knitting 🙂

I hate when I make those kind of mistakes! That looks like an interesting book.
