On the way home from a Sunday afternoon baseball tournament, we pulled over for an unplanned pause in our journey. The tournament was only a little over an hour away from home to begin with, and we were more than halfway back, but found ourselves in serious need of some time to decompress, to exhale. There was crying, fighting, obnoxious singing, and we just needed to make it stop. We stayed for less than an hour, and it was time well spent.
In many areas of our life, I am finding that Jonny and I need to do a better job of knowing when it’s better to stop, than to keep pushing forward. We need to find times and places to rest, even if it’s just for a few moments.
I hope you found some rest in your weekend!

Beautiful place to stop and readjust. I love how Ann Voskamp closes her weekend posts: “Go slow. Be God-struck.” That phrase rings through my head like a mantra all week. I am always hurrying, always rushing, always pushing. Slow. Quiet. Rest.

We all learn that little by little.

Ginny,
That’s a good point about knowing when to stop and not keep pushing forward. A lesson we can certainly work on as well. 🙂
Love,
Taryn

DH and I were just talking about this this weekend. It’s an ongoing learning process for us, too. Looks like a great little trip.

I find we too need moments to stop pushing forward, as you said. They are surprisingly more frequent than I would have imagined. And little walks amongst flowers, trees and plants are the perfect remedy. Thank you for sharing yours.

Such a good thing to remember. Thank you for that.

Love this! My husband and I are technically homeless right now (he travels for work so we put our stuff in storage and I came with him) and there are definitely moments when we get to that point of OMG WE’VE BEEN IN THE CAR FOREVER!
Resting is a great idea. Obviously, it’s different since we don’t have seven kids in the car 🙂
That last photo of Silas is amazing.

that is a very good realization!

I agree, that one of the best things about your blog is your honesty. That last photograph is lovely.

Lexington! We will be there the week of the 4th for a horse show. It is always SO hot & humid. Any recommendations for a kid friendly place to visit within an hour drive?
Ginny says
We weren’t actually in Lexington, but at the site of Stonewall Jackson’s death in Caroline County. He was buried in Lexington though, and that is why they added that to that little monument. It is hot and humid here though!!! Have fun at the horse show 🙂

What a beautiful place to stop. I bet the fresh air was an immediate help.

One of the things I like best about your blog, Ginny, is your honesty. You are very open about your daily life with your family, the good things and the less-good things. I think this is very important and I am so glad you do it.

Getting outside and running around is often the best remedy for family tensions! I can be feeling completely overwhelmed and exasperated, the kids fighting and whining and crying, but if I just leave it all and escape outside it (mostly) all goes away and we feel so much better.

Looks like everyone got a minute to stretch their legs. Our family camps. That is when we take our moments to relax and take a break from everything. We also like to stop and take time to talk about our upcoming trips and make wish lists of things we want to do. It is nice to stop and savor the moment sometimes.
