(his first clothes, ready and waiting)
Saturday night Jonny and I were pulling together the last of what we need to be ready for the birth when I realized that somehow we don’t have any basic newborn caps. I did the obvious thing: grabbed some undyed superwash wool, and cast on for what I hope is a small enough stockinette hat. On Sunday, I knitted a little ribbed hat by modifying one of Stephanie McPhee’s patterns, because I know that the stretchy ribbing will give a good snug fit. Ravelry notes for both hats are here.
I’ve been asked several times for my favorite baby knits. You know what? This is my first time seriously knitting for a newborn. Beatrix was born in November, so she could have used handknits, but I was still mostly knitting very simple stockinette hats at that point. Silas was born in May, and didn’t really need anything until the following fall. For this baby, I’ve tried to focus on knitting things that will be truly useful. And because a couple of you asked if I would create a list of all my newborn knits in one place, I’ll include a list of links at the end of this post to all of my baby knits on Ravelry. You can also find everything on my blog by looking under my finished knits category. There are little thumbnail images there to make it easy to navigate.
*The Kumfy™ Schlüttli baby gown* I’ve knit this one twice. My notes are here and here.
*Puerperium Cardigan* My notes here.
*Bring it on Baby Blanket* My notes here.
*Small Things Romper* My notes here.
*Balloon Baby Pants* My notes here.
*Baby Vertebrae* My notes here.
*Lil’ Midi Bean* My notes here.
*Perfect fit Newborn Socks* My notes here and here.
*Lorne’s hat* This is an adult pattern that I modified because I like Stephanie’s decreases. My notes here.
*Simple Newborn Hat with a Touch of Lace* This is my pattern (with the too long name) I didn’t actually knit the lace for my baby boy, but did follow the decreases for the simple stockinette cap. My notes here.
Okay, baby. We’re ready. Seriously. Preferably before Halloween, but not on it. Please?

Can I come be a little baby at your house and wear all that wooly goodness. I didn’t start kniting until I had my third. He has lived in Wyoming for all but his first 10 weeks and so he has had much need for hand knits. I do love that I live in a place where you could use a hat year round. Enjoy that little one. May he come quickly and not on Halloween.
Dawn Suzette says
All the best in the coming days, Ginny!
And my cousin was born on Halloween and loved it. Just saying. Just in case 🙂

Oh my goodness, look at those teeny tiny socks! ♥ You are an amazing knitter, Ginny. Your baby certainly has a beautiful, cozy layette.

Lucky baby boy. I am a crocheter, not a knitter, but I wish I’d been better at crochet when I had my two, who were both born in September. I just made a sweater and hat set for a friend’s baby, due in just over a week, and I would have really liked making things like that for mine. Oh well, there will hopefully be grandchildren someday. 🙂

My first three were born between March and May. Imagine the delight when my fourth was born in December….so many delicious tiny knits to whip up! She looked adorable in everything, and now she’s growing into the 12 month sized stuff I made for her older siblings.
Wishing you all the best as you anticipate the healthy, safe delivery of your newest babe!

Love seeing what you are knitting for your wee one. We’re due a few weeks after you, so it’s been neat seeing what you’ve been doing to get ready in parallel.

The baby knits are so sweet and adorable. Good luck, will be praying for you and your wee one. Thank you for photographing all the little knits in one place and adding the links with all the info, that is so sweet. I’m afraid I would of been way too distracted to do that. But we are so lucky you did it! Can’t wait to meet the new baby. Blessings on all of you!

I’m dying over here; these are so beautiful. My wee babe is 5 weeks old and I am still trying to eek out one puerperium. I’m getting ready to cast on for a hat too, but I was wondering which hat pattern you prefer for a newborn. I have made the Lil Midi and a Garnstudio pilot cap, but I’m wondring if ou have a favorite, or if anyone out there does. Good luck Ginny! I hope the little one heeds your wishes and comes before Halloween. I can’t wait to hear all about the birth! Sending laborious vibes your way!

Dear Ginny I love allyour babyknits, they are so inspiring!
What is broken rib stich, that you used for the Milo?
I like making Milos, they are such easy and fun knits, and they are so practical!
The broken rib stich looks just beautiful, and I would like to add it to my next Milo!
With kind regards

I understand your feelings! I said the same, but it was not to be. I had my baby on Halloween last year at 7:00 at night, right in the middle of trick -or-treating time 🙂 My kids came to the birthing center to visit their brother in their costumes, and my son lost his tooth “at exactly 7:00, Mom!”, which was exactly when this little guy came into the world. I said the same thing: not Halloween! But now I just love my little Halloween babe, the sweetest little babe I could have ever imagined! And we all love his little Halloween birthday. Ginny, I’m really looking forward to the arrival of your little one to your sweet family! xoxo

None of my babies have had many handknits. Fiona & John are the only two that I was knitting for, and Fiona had a few things—booties, longies, a bunting, and a hat knitted by Elisabeth—but not many as I felt worse during her pregnancy than any of the others. I limited what I knitted for John because he was a summer baby, even though I’m more of a knitter now and would have loved to have knit more. So he got booties, two sweaters, a longie, and a soaker, all if which except the soaker were only worn once or twice. Sad.

So Precious!!!! Your baby will be very well dressed!

My daughter was due December 8. At my regular checkup on Oct 30, my dr decided she needed to come early. By the time we got to the hospital, saw drs, etc, it would be early Oct 31 before our daughter was born. I argued with the dr, not wanting my daughter born on Oct 31. He assured me that God knew what was going on, she would be born on the day He choses.
My daughter was born at 11:40pm on Oct 30.

What a beautiful layette for a special little boy. And nothing wrong with a Halloween birthday, my oldest was born on Halloween, he was our extra special treat 🙂 Actually 4 of my seven are holiday babies…the others are Christmas, 4th of July, and Veteran’s day.
Blessings for an uneventful labor and delivery.
Tiff
