According to Larkspur, autumn is the best time of year in her mud pie kitchen.
(Just so you know, had I known what Beatrix and Silas were up to before it was too late, I would have put a stop to it. They had both already been bathed once that day and Silas was wearing wool–handwash only–pants. But, they had so much fun that evening that it was worth the second baths and the laundry.)

It brings me so much delight to see children playing in the mud. My mother let my sister and I do the same throughout our childhood – she was more concerned with being a mother than she was with being a perfect house-keeper or what have you; and her approach was closer to the heart of motherhood than most I’ve seen since. She let us be children. Mud, rainwater, and the imagination go together like nothing else.

wow, that looks like so much fun for the kiddos! 🙂 getting messy is a thing of the childhood (although we mommies do see lots of woooorrrrkkk following, I admit 😉 ) Good on you for letting them be! 🙂

so cute! your silas is getting so big! no longer a baby- just in time for a new tiny one 🙂
your pictures totally just inspired me to haul all the mud kitchen stuff from the way back of our yard where my girls had pretty much forgotten about it. now it’s nice and close to the house where they can more easily get water from the hose. I just won’t show my husband these pictures 😉 he wasn’t so sure about the whole mud kitchen idea to begin with and that mess may be too much for him to handle 🙂

What lovely pictures of childhood freedom and innocence. They warmed my heart to see such unfettered fun. There is nothing I like best than seeing my Little Son having that kind of fun (even if clean up is difficult!!). Lily. xxx

Regarding something altogether different; I made that squash, onion, sp, apple…dish last night. It was fantastic and even better eaten cold for breakfast! I have a soup that I like that calls for all of those ingredients, It never occurred to me to just bake them. I’m actually planning on making it again this weekend. Thanks for sharing!

They look sooooo happy! And that´s what counts, isn´t it?

Making mud pies was one activity that my sister and I used to love to do. My sweet mom would buy us shaving cream so we could put pretend whipped cream on them! Those were the days!! 🙂

What a wonderful Mom.

I can not believe how big Silas is getting. He looks so much like a boy now.

every single child on earth should make one mud pie. I used to make so many and my gram would willingly ‘taste’ each slice given to her. We used to decorate them with flowers!
Great photos 🙂

Wonderful, this is the kind of activity that makes kids grow and learn!
We should all try it a little now and then, it is inspiring!

My children love mud, too. Painting with mud was a highlight one summer-I need to pluck up my courage to bring out the paper, brushes and pots to make mud again. One of my great memories, from childhood, was of catching dirty washing up water to make mud.

Those grey dresses the girls are wearing in that top picture are ADORABLE! Did you make them? I love them!
Also, how cute are Silas’ curls? Swoon. That looks like a fun mud pie kitchen. I would totally ruin my handwash only pants… 🙂

What a fun day.

My sisters and I were notorious for getting covered in mud when we were younger. My mother never once put up a stink about it, and I still look back at that as one of her greatest strengths. Now that I’m a mother I realize how hard it is to just let my daughter be when she starts digging through the dirt in the garden, but I let her have her fun. The memories are so worth it!
Lori Ann says
Love the girls tiered dresses – so darling! What fun – we should all be so happy getting messy!
A Little Blue Dragonfly says

well, these pictures are worth it too I think! I remember loving the times when I was outside and a bit dirty too! 🙂 🙂

Yes, it seems that some of life’s best lessons come from getting our hands (and the rest of us) dirty. We recently spent some time in a friend’s giant pumpkin patch learning too…not so dirty, but equally fun.http://agreenhearth.com/lessons-in-the-pumpkin-patch/

I was going to ask, how you get the mud out of the wool….than I read the last lines of your post. 🙂 I love allowing children to get dirty…with the proper apparel. I’ve been considering an outdoor kitchen for my children. Using my kitchen as their workshop for seeds, weeds and herb concoctions does not work well for keeping a clean kitchen.
