Today the girls and I made paper dolls and coloring books together. I got my own coloring book. I think that was the best part, coloring at the table between my girls. They sandwich me so tightly. Meals are much the same. Funny how little ones don’t concern themselves with things like elbow room. We have a variety of colored pencils at our house, and today we even pulled out the fancy ones (expensive but really wonderful.) I think I want a coloring book like this wildflowers one for me too. Coloring is surprisingly therapeutic.
p.s. Saturday Garden Journal this weekend, and a great giveaway too.

I love this so much Ginny, the girls sweet happiness at being with their mama and creating. There is of course almost always some kind of handwork or making happening here too, but I have been thinking I would like some more time with the girls sitting down to a specific project. Thanks for offering more inspiration.
(And now Ginny, it looks like I am going to be doing a lot of sewing in the coming weeks, I have a request for two, and the girls really need new dresses, I am looking forward to it all!)
Hope you and family have a wonderful weekend!
Love, Renee

My girls practically sit in my lap when I’m between them. Love the paper dolls with the cardboard backing. I’m going to try that with my kiddos. I’ve always enjoyed coloring, like you said, its very therapeutic.

Coloring helped me through the shock of one of my most difficult times. My firstborn daughter returned from her freshman year of college pregnant, and totally not committed to the father. Among other things, I also went out and bought new coloring books and crayons and sat and colored off and on for several days. It was very therapeutic to calm my reeling mind. It is also a companionable thing to do with others. She carried the baby to term, and against my most heartfelt objections, placed the baby in an adoptive family. But coloring reminds me of those days. Happily, it is an open adoption and I do occasionally get to visit my granddaughter.

I love the homemade books, I have made some in the past but not thought of sewing them together, a great idea. My children are not fans of colouring they prefer blank paper and their own creations, I make them blank page books, maybe I could put a random colouring page in it and see what the reaction is!

I love the idea of making a coloring book! How wonderful for you and your girls to craft together. And I have always loved coloring…because my drawing is just not good 🙂 But coloring, that is something I can get into!

I love to color! I’ve been patiently waiting for my older boy to get into it. He recently has. I should put together some little coloring books. Thanks for the great ideas.
Enjoy your weekend.

AGREE! It is therapeutic…meditative almost. I love to color…although don’t ever find/create the time to do it. Maybe a weekly coloring fest is in order. My kids prefer plain paper and their own creativity, but I like the lines. I need them. I could go into the deep thoughts on why I think I may feel like I need them so much…but maybe I’ll just go color instead and let that thought go. Have a wonderful sun shine~y weekend!

It is! Those colors stay right where you put them — all neat and tidy! Whenever we have adult nieces over, they always sit and color. Sometimes great aunts and grandmas, too.

I love to color too. It’s very rare these days that I’m allowed to color without being told which color to use and where to put it. But it’s still fun 😉

My 11yod is a gifted artist (her instructor will no longer teach her because there’s nothing left to teach apparently) and her favourite thing to do while winding down in the evenings is colour. She loves ‘pattern’ books like this one:

We homeschool as well, and have found that she learns best when she can be creative. As well as using the Waldorf idea of ‘mainlesson books’, we use colouring books for as many topics as we can.

I have to say that I so miss spending time coloring and crafting with my kids (the 11yo is my ‘baby’ :).

I enjoy coloring too. We often end up coloring the same page since we are so huddled together!

I love to color with my children. My 25 year-old son sat down with his two youngest siblings (4 and 7) the last time he was over and colored for over an hour! My 18 year-old daughter loves to sketch and then fill the pictures in with her colored pencils. Actually, now that I think of it, all of my kids regardless of their age will plunk down and color from time-to-time! Happy weekend! +JMJ+

So sweet and love those colouring pictures too! x

Isn’t it lovely as a grown-up to sit and do something as utterly useless as coloring? You’re right; such things are really therapeutic, because there is no pressure to be creative or do a good job…it’s just a pleasant pastime.
I love your big kitchen table; hoping that if the new house ever gets done I’ll have one like it!
