~ Two of my favorite things are knitting and reading, and the evidence of this often shows up in my photographs. I love seeing what other people are knitting and reading as well. So, what are you knitting or crocheting right now? What are you reading? Take a photo and share it either on your blog or on Flickr. Leave a link below to share your photo with the rest of us! ~
I’m knitting a sock. A sock! Assuming I follow through with these, this will be my first pair. Seth requested socks nearly a year ago. I found yarn in the perfect color (he doesn’t branch far from dark green) and bought it within days of the request. I wound it months ago, but couldn’t get excited about socks for some reason. This week I decided that I better start working on them. A couple of inches in I started getting kind of excited. The ribbing is so nice and stretchy and the color is so pretty. I think I like knitting socks (well, a sock.) I just hope that I can persevere through sock number two without becoming too bored. The pattern is a free one, and I am using Muscadine sock yarn.
I picked up Sarah’s Key at the library today and I am already about halfway through. The story is a fictionalized account of events surrounding the great Velodrome d’Hiver roundup which took place in France in 1942. It’s a very sad book so far.

Maybe this is a sign I should be knitting socks instead of the Oaklet Shawl! That IS the purpose of sock yarn, maybe my shawl needs a different yarn. I just can’t picture myself finishing two entire socks. Hmm, have to think on this a bit. Will be checking for the book at my local library. Thank you for Yarn Along, it really keeps me motivated!
Heather L. says
Yes, the book is very sad but somehow I persevered and always recommend it as a very good book.
Annie says
love love LOVE that colour!
Leslie says
I’ve read that book, it is sad, but I found the history very interesting, and I’m not really a history buff.
Socks, I’ve the second one on needles for about 6-7 years 🙁 the Farmer is waiting, I think he’s forgotten.
Gesche says
Oh, that green is so lovely! Reminds me of a day in the woods. So happy to hear you started the sock business. I also did so a few month back, inspired by yarn along of course and have done a few pairs since. Love it! Enjoy!!!
Marie/Underground Crafter says
My special guy will only wear charcoal and black handknits. Forest green sounds really exciting in comparison :). I hope you can get excited about socks, because I want to try some and I’m sure your excitement will be infectious.
Gretchen R says
I didn’t read the book, but I saw the movie and bawled my eyes out.

I started reading “Sarah’s Key” at Target one day, and had read half the book before I looked up again. I meant to go check it out from the library to finish it, but I have to be in a bit of a gloomy mood for a book that dark, so I’ve never made it.
The beautiful color of that green yarn is probably a nice counterpoint!
Nichole says
that green yarn is delicious!
Teri says
I love that you are knitting a sock. I too find it hard to get number two done:)
Sarah’s key is a tough one. Liked it but cried some in in!
Jen says
I began to read that book not too long ago. I had to put it aside because it became too sad for me. She’s supposed to be an amazing author.
Erin @ Wild Whispers says
I love that green… good luck on the sock!
dawn says
My first real knitting project was this exact pattern! before that, just gauge swatches. i did get a mean case of “second sock syndrome” though– i started them in january and didn’t get the second one done until last week! it only took me 4 days though, and they were ready (for my husband) just in time for father’s day! good luck!
Wendy says
That green is fabulous! I have trouble getting excited about socks–I frogged the only one I’ve ever attempted.
Alison haberstroh says
Oh, socks are om my agenda this summer! Looks like a fun project.
Gracey says
The reason I learned to knit was socks….I’ve made three pairs so far….and Sarah’s Key is an excellent book, sad, but excellent!
Darcel {the mahogany way} says
I would love to knit socks. My kids would want them up to their knees. Pretty green.
Carrie "Forrest" says
SOCKS ARE SO MUCH FUN…but I must keep my focuse and not be wooed by your lovely greenies.

Ginny, you’ve got to learn to knit socks 2 at a time. It’s the only way!! No more ‘second sockitis’ 🙂 I like using the 2 circular needle method, but magic loop works too. I love the green.
steph says
Beware! socks are terribly addictive!!!!
Andrea says
I just love to hear of a knitter tackling socks, it’s such rewarding knitting. Unfortunately after knitting close to 50 pairs (and teaching sock knitting), I’ve completely burned myself out so sock yarn is in time out for now. I always did what so many others above commented on, get another set of dpn’s and get that second sock going and they’ll be done in no time. I absolutely loved Sarah’s Key, one of the best books I’ve ever read along with The Book Thief (young adult novel and same subject matter, but I couldn’t put it down). Happy knitting! Can’t wait to see your completed pair in that gorgeous green, my favorite color!
Tonya - Plain and Joyful Living says
Socks are one thing I haven’t made with dpn yet and real sock yarn – I hope to give it a try soon – yours look great and so neat that Seth is asking for them.
Donna says
Such pretty socks. I love that color green. That’s whats on my needles right now too 🙂
Ellen says
Love the sock color – hope you keep up your excitement for the matching one. Sarah’s Key was much better in the first half of the book than the 2nd imo. The 2nd was a little more cliche writing and I really hated how the author’s view of divorce was ho-hum. I won’t say more since I don’t want to spoil the read for you.
Tina says
Great looking sock and it’s going to be quite lovely in Maya’s scrumptious yarn! I love knitting socks but never came seem to get finished with the first one, much less the mate 🙂 Your book looks quite interesting too … I will have to check that on out. Thanks for a great Yarn Along post today 🙂
Linda says
Thank you so much for this link up Ginny.
I love the colour of the yarn you are knitting in, socks are wonderful projects.
Happy knitting
Linda
Courtney {A Life Sustained} says
Good luck with the sock! That’s one I haven’t tackled yet. I love the color!
Camilla says
Knitting socks today too Ginny, I think it is nice with a lighter project in summer. Socks are fun I think you’ll love it.
Happy Knitting!

I am just casting on for my second sock in my pair. Ours yarns almost match! I really like other peoples advice about knitting them both at the same time though. I think I am going to try that next time around.

I’m going to knit socks soon, too! Good luck … I prefer the toe-up method which I find similar to the top-down method for pullovers. Sarah’s Key has been on my list of “to read” for too long … must get to it.
Dawn says
I knit socks two at a time, not in the loop method, just two socks on two sets of double pointed needles. When I finish a few rows of knitting on one, I do the same amount of rows on the other. The reason is that I am a one sock knitter otherwise. I have a couple of socks floating around here that never got their mate.
Joy says
Ooh, the green is lovely! Like it wants to get lost in a forest on a long hike. 🙂 I love sock knitting. A nice simple pattern is a a good start (and small feet, ha!) I started knitting socks by knitting them for Finn around age 3. Quicker turnaround and great confidence builder.
Jessica says
I haven’t knitted socks in a couple of years, not counting the baby socks I knit last month. Those were easy and quite cute. Yours are looking good. Love green.
I read Sarah’s Key a while back. Not quite a light summer read. Engaging though.
Nadja says
You go, girl!
Learning to knit socks was on my list of New Year’s resolutions for 2011, I think. I wasn’t having too much luck and got frustrated. I really ought to give it another go, as all my kids (and the husband) could use wool socks in the winter, and I can’t afford them!
I am so inspired! And your color is just gorgeous. I love greens…
Sylvia - artsy ants says
oh, that dark green yarn looks absolutely delicious. i’ve got nothing to link up today, as i’m busy with snuggling and baby gazing. my little baby girl was born on saturday morning. looking forward to joining in again very soon!! xx
Andee- Match the Pictures says
Good luck with your socks. I really like the color. I enjoy knitting socks (I enjoy teaching people how to make socks), but I always recommend using the stretchy cast on method for casting on socks. Good luck!
barbara says
Ooh, I am turning my first heel(using a similar pattern from ravelry), but I have a feeling I will be suffering from second sock syndrome. It can always be used as a Christmas stocking, right?
Dawn says
Stop right where you are and go get another set of dpns and start your second sock. Catch up to the point where you are now and then knit them side by side. Knit a few rows of one, then knit the same few rows on the other. This was the only way I was cured of second sock syndrome. I would like to learn to learn how to knit two at a time on circulars…but I tried once and it became a tangled mess.
Mistea says
They will be one gorgeous pair of socks.
It’s been a while since I knit socks but I am seriously considering some soon. Look forward to seeing your progress.
Enjoy the pretty yarn.
Hannah@HomeBaked says
The forest green is gorgeous!
My tip for persevering with socks is to cast on the second sock immediately after finishing the first – don’t wait until the next day! – and take it everywhere with you.
My knitting has been somewhat slow and interrupted this week :o/
Hannah@HomeBaked says
Apologies – I’m always forgetting about the automatic smily faces and mine turn out wrong!
Angela says
What a great green! Congrats on your first PAIR of socks, I have faith in your knitting skills and perseverence. 🙂 I’ve made 3 pair, all Christmas 2010 gifts, but haven’t been motivated to make a pair for myself. Maybe someday…
Christina says
I brought my first yarn for socks recently, as socks are on my list of things to attempt to knit. It is Winter here in Australia and I am knitting a cardigan for myself and a sweater for my baby at present, but when the weather warms up again I shall begin on the socks. I too am concerned though that my patience and interest may be exhausted at the end of the first sock. 🙂
embracingitall says
What gorgeous coloured yarn. I hope you get through the sock knitting! I haven’t attempted socks yet. I hate the thought of going to all that trouble and then putting a hole in the toe. One day maybe. Jacinta

Our socks are looking very similar!

My camera is broken, so I can’t join in today. But I wanted to comment on Sarah’s Key. It’s extremely sad, but it’s really good. I liked it very much. I had a friend who had difficulty reading it (said it was because she had children; I wouldn’t know, I have none of my own). But I liked it. Happy Wednesday!
Kathleen says
good luck with your socks! I would like to try my hand at a pair but I’m still a little afraid to start. Sarah’s Key looks like a good book but I don’t know if I want to read something sad. Please let us know how it turns out. I’m curious.
meghann says
I want to try socks as well – I’ve never made any. I think maybe in the fall, for the children. Little socks will be good ones to learn with, I think. I love the color! xo
Emily T. says
Oh how could you not *love* that green???
Hooray for jumping on the sock wagon! I’m still working on my socks this week.
Tracey suggested to me to knit both socks at the same time so you don’t suffer the dreaded “second sock” syndrome. It really has helped both me (and my Mom!) with our sock knitting.
Tracey says
Sock knitting is the reason I taught myself to knit and I love it. To avoid the dreaded second sock syndrome I knit both socks side by side using dpn’s. I knit the ribbing on one, then do the second sock on another set of needles, then move to the leg and do both of those and so on, that way they are both done at the same time.
Heather says
Socks…I have knit many pairs of socks for my kids, but not for myself. I think that part of the problem I have is the thought of using such small needles…and how long that will take me to finish all those tiny stitches! It is a goal of mine to get socks made for myself this year. Also sweaters…but that is another story 🙂 I love the color!
Heather says
Congratulations on your first sock. Eamon asked me for a pair recently. I bought the yarn (green too), and it has just sat there. Perhaps I should follow your lead.
