Preparing our hearts

We are slowly easing our way into this beautiful new season of waiting.  I am spending evenings cleaning and organizing, and preparing for Christmas in my own way.  This year we are embracing traditions old and new, and letting some go as well.

There are the traditional Advent calendars (I usually buy several because I have a good many children.)  I loved them so much as a child, that I have never been inclined to create anything more. (we have this one, this one, and this one this year.)

The Advent and Christmas books have been brought down from the attic.

Mary is making her journey to Bethlehem.
(these candle holders and these candles fit the Way of Light Wreath)
The little manger sits empty, waiting for the Christ Child.
I whisper to my girls, “Even the animals know….”

And this year, a new addition:  A manger, a jar of yarn, and an invitation to make a soft bed for baby Jesus.  Every loving act, every little sacrifice, an opportunity to add another piece of “straw.”  When Christmas morning finally arrives, the little Lord Jesus will have a soft place to lay His sweet head.  (I plan to make a simple swaddled doll.)

You can do this too!  You don’t need a real manger.  A basket, or even a shoebox would work.  I filled an old honey jar with yarn, and hammered a hole in the lid for the strand of yarn to be pulled through.

And there is more planned:

We will make a new beeswax nativity
There will be Christmas for the animals
And hopefully so much more.  I will share as we go!
My Christmas book list is up in the sidebar as well!

Hi, I am really enjoying your Advent ideas. I am wondering where you got the darling wooden Creche.

Thanks again. The Nativity was on sale. Though expensive it will become a special tradition. I love that my little ones will be able to handle it without breaking. Also, my husband is German so he will appreciate that it is German. Maybe he can build us a creche too. Though he’s not a co-worker. 🙂

Oh, I love the idea of the manger being filled with yarn hay until baby Jesus arrives. “Even the animals know.” – so profound! You are doing a wonderful job of teaching your littles reverence during this holiday season.
