~ Two of my favorite things are knitting and reading, and the evidence of this often shows up in my photographs. I love seeing what other people are knitting and reading as well. So, what are you knitting or crocheting right now? What are you reading? Take a single photo and share it either on your blog or on Flickr. Leave a link below to share your photo with the rest of us! ~
I just have to post two photos today, because this is my almost eight year old son Keats’ first time to join our Yarn Along! Keats learned to knit last year, but never knit more than a few practice rows back and forth before losing interest each time he sat down to knit. He would watch me knit in the round though, and beg me to teach him how, so finally last fall I did. He began this hat way back then, and has picked it up here and there. Recently my three boys and I have been spending about an hour most evenings doing handwork, and Keats’ interest in finishing the hat was renewed. He used scraps of Mission Falls 1824 that I had leftover from other hats, hence all his fun stripes. He learned not only how to change colors on his own (I would just hover nervously nearby while he did it), but also only let me put the first few stitches on a double point when it was time to start decreasing before insisting he could do the rest himself. He did finish it up all by himself at nearly midnight this past Sunday because he wanted to wear it snowboarding the next day. I was needed for support here and there (he exclaimed over and over that using the double points was really hard!), but he never had any major issues. I have to admit that it made me kind of crazy, worrying that he was going to mess it up there at the end, but he wouldn’t have let me finish it for him even if I had begged him. He did let me weave in all the loose ends once he was finished though–so kind of him.
So, being knitters, you know how good it feels to finish a project, and you can probably remember what it felt like your first time. It was so amazing to get to share that with Keats. I was afraid he wouldn’t be able to fall asleep he was so happy with his hat. He even slept in it that night.
He was also incredibly excited to join the Yarn Along this week, so if you leave a comment, I will be sure and read it to him! Didn’t he do such a great job with his decreases?? No laddering!
And, as for what he’s reading, (he arranged his hat and the book he’s reading for the picture) as you can see, it’s the Christian Liberty Nature Reader Book 1. He is not the bookworm that Seth is, and this is what he reads for school each day. Other than this he mainly reads picture books here and there.
