For years we have been meaning to hike to Crabtree Falls, supposedly the tallest waterfall east of the Mississippi. Last week on our day off, we finally made the trip. After a picnic lunch, we headed up the trail. During the last half mile or so of the nearly two mile uphill hike, we repeatedly discussed turning back. Larkspur grew tired (and so whiny!) and Beatrix grew heavy. But, we persisted to the top, Larkspur finally getting a turn in the backpack while I, huffing and puffing, carried Beatrix up those last few switchbacks in my arms. The view at the top was well worth it (although the falls were not that fabulous due to the dry summer we have had) and I was glad that we were alone at the top considering that three of my five children started crying and throwing fits moments after we arrived. I guess it was a bit much. At least the two miles back to the van were downhill!
