I think we just had the most eventful week we’ve had in a very long time. The fact that two of the major events last week weren’t planned in advance made things that much more busy. Let’s see: there was my sister’s last minute trip to bring us a puppy (the puppy also being a last minute decision) and visit for a few days, Jonny’s emergency appendectomy, lots of fossil hunting despite the surgery, our first chick hatching, and a great visit with good friends.
Right now I am feeling a little bit swamped. There is much to do in the garden, but we are having to back down a bit as Jonny recovers. Walking is fine, but lifting is still out. And homeschooling: I just want to quit and have fun! I am doing my best to consolidate lessons and move towards wrapping up the year, but the reality is that we still have a good six weeks to go. In the crafting department, I have gone seriously ADD. My one knitting project at a time rule has been broken times four I believe. Last week I had four sewing projects all cut out to sew, and my sewing machine broke. Luckily I was able to have it repaired quickly, and will hopefully be able to complete some things in the next couple of days. I really hate when I am swamped with works in progress with nothing to show for it all. I have such a neat project in the works for my girls, that I will hopefully be sharing with you next week.
Trudy is fitting into our family so well and I am not feeling any stress coming from her direction, which I am grateful for. I was a bit afraid that I would regret adopting a puppy. She is a pretty calm little girl, and I love having a warm little furry body snuggled next to me while I knit in the evening.
Of course she isn’t perfect. She will chew on most anything, even the twine on my little pea trellis.
Oh yeah, and she chases chickens sometimes. Nothing fierce, just a bit of puppy fun.
We have been eating some of our homegrown food: lettuce, spinach, and asparagus. I am so worn out right now, that I don’t know how we will get everything else planted in the next few weeks.
My perennials are starting to bloom, despite the fact that my perennial bed is absolutely choked with ground ivy. I can’t seem to muster the motivation or find the time to start pulling it out. By the way, THIS is such a great website if you are interested in Virginia/Southeast weed identification. You know you love weed science.
We make so many trips out to the chicken coop everyday to check on our chicks. Yes, there is more than one now! I will share more about that tomorrow I think.
Our “firstborn” is being called Little Pip by the kids. We are convinced that Pip is a boy.
Look at Mama Hen spreading her wings out defensively! Maggie, our dog, had just walked up to the outside of the run and Mama did not like that at all.
Larkspur continues to pick lots of lovely bouquets of wild flowers.
She also picks all the not so wild ones…
(moments after I took that first photo, this peony got the snip and was presented to me in a soda bottle.)
I’m hoping to pull myself together over the next week and stop feeling so scatterbrained!
