We are in our tenth year of sharing our bed with our children at various stages of their lives. While we have savored the months when we had our bed all to ourselves, we welcome our children when they need it. Currently, we have Beatrix with us full time and Larkspur is a part timer.
Larkspur has always been an independent little thing and was sleeping on her own from the age of two weeks (in a basket next to our bed) up until a couple of months ago when we rearranged our house and moved our bed from the living room, to the upstairs. Seth got Larkspur’s room (which is downstairs) because he really needed his own space, and Lark now has a twin mattress at the foot of our king sized bed, basically because we are out of space.
Despite her own cozy little spot in our room, lately Larkspur has wanted to fall asleep in our bed. We move her when we go to bed ourselves, but by the time morning comes, she is usually snuggled back in with us again.
Sharing our bed has worked for us, and despite what some may say, they do end up in their own beds without much fuss eventually, when everyone is ready.
Right now, we are happy just how we are.(I will be referring back to this post myself the next time I have a little freak out session over Beatrix and the fact that she may very well be the child who never leaves our bed, and never stops nursing.)
