Childhood Favorite

After writing about my dear grandparents, I thought about these two pictures I have that I really treasure. These were taken on Christmas many years ago. I don’t think I had ever heard of A.G. Bear before. He was not a gift I requested, but a surprise. I love the look on my face and my outstretched hand in the first picture, like I was so happy about this gift and I could hardly believe I was really getting it.
And here, I wonder what my grandmother was saying. She must have been helping me open the box to get my bear out.

This picture is pretty sweet, and pretty interesting because I am not a particularly snuggly person, and my sisters and I (that’s me on the left) are looking a bit like sardines in a tin. I bet my mom is going to want this picture back. And see, there is A.G. Bear on the left next to me. I have no idea why, but I loved that bear. He went everywhere I went for years, and I mean even when I was maybe too old to be carrying a teddy bear. I have a picture of myself on the bus in middle school, headed to Florida on a band trip, and A.G. is in my arms. In fact I still have him, but he doesn’t talk in “bear talk” anymore and he lives in Lark’s room. I should have taken his picture for this post. Oh well, I don’t suppose it would amuse anyone much but me.

Does any one childhood gift really stand out in your mind?

I had my Uncle Ludy Doll that I cherished. I didn't get to keep her long though as our house burned down and she with it. But she was almost as big as I was (I think I was 3 or 4 at the time) and I loved her dearly. My Uncle Ludy Doll (obviously named for the uncle who gave it to me) was my treasure and we girls still talk about her. She was pudgy and furry and all pink and I loved her so much. I remember lugging her from Texas to California where we lived at the time. An awful lot of years have gone by since my Uncle Ludy Doll but my memories of her are as vivid as if I got her yesterday. For some reason within the last couple months my sister brought up the subject of that doll. She didn't have a name. We just called her Uncle Ludy Doll. It's the only thing any of us ever called her. Thanks for sharing and for letting me share a precious memory!

i have a stuffed bear named Joshua. he was the first toy/stuffed animal which my parents got me – looking at old photos [just sunday in fact] he was so very shiny. now, still in our room, he's got a button eye and has seen better days. but i love that bear. when my brother and i would 'play house' my bear was "grandma". we'd prop him against the bedroom door on the outside, then knock, and open the door and down came grandma on her entry into the 'house' LOL – fun times :)thanks for sharing your pictures!

I had a Cabbage Patch doll named Shelly that my parents bought when I was a baby (they'd just come out), and I kept it until I was 21. Even slept with it until I moved out at 18. It was comforting. I ended up getting rid of it, but sometimes I wish I hadn't. 🙂

I definitely would have amused me – or more accurately, comforted me to see old AG again (though if I had to vote it is the middle school you and AG, I'd pick). This post makes me smile..and feel teary, too. Poignant. Lark looks so much like you! The photo of you all in bed is much like the view I see every morning – sardines describes it….but I'd have it no other way. (I could do without the dog, though, I'll say that.)
