Please pray for Moses

Moses’ surgery went fine, they operated around 8 am today. The defect in his abdomen was very large, so they are keeping him longer than we expected though. We were told that the surgery would take about 30 minutes, and then he would need to recover for another 30 before coming home. We were also told that he wouldn’t be in much pain afterward and we would just need to give him tylenol. Well, he is in a lot of pain. A local anesthetic was injected at the incision site and he has been given two doses of morphine today, and he is still hurting to the point that he breaks out in a sweat if he moves. At one point he wanted Jonny to help him roll onto his side, but it hurt too much. We just weren’t expecting this amount of pain. Please pray that the pain lessens and that we don’t experience a setback with Moses because of the surgery. He has been doing so incredibly well. I am not sure that we prepared him for the surgery well enough. I hope that we haven’t lost his trust. Maybe we should have waited longer to have this done. I don’t know. It’s is very hard knowing that he is in pain. Moses really wants to come home; Jonny says he keeps asking to. I am waiting to hear if they will release him today or if they are going to keep him overnight. If they do of course Jonny will stay there with him.

My son had a hernia operation when he was 4 years old (1970) and his doctors didn't do any better at preparing us for his surgery. He suffered greatly and I begged them to give him something for his pain and they refused. They said he would heal much faster without any drugs! Yeah, right! And I have a bridge I want to sell too! Anyway, I ended up slipping him one of my aspirin with codeine (an act that I do NOT recommend) and he was able to at least go to sleep. His was really serious and they kept him in the hospital for 2 full days. Of course, they used to keep everyone longer in the hospital! Now it's just snip, snap, staple, bandage and you're on your way home before you even know if you're going to hurt and of course by then it's the middle of the night and no doctor anywhere in sight!!! I'm praying for Moses as I write this. Just tell him over and over again that the doctor misled you. Place the blame where it belongs. Doctors really need to learn that kids hurt too and can benefit from analgesics even narcotics and I'd share that information with the good doctor. But I'm sure Moses will not hold you responsible for his pain. That is one good thing about kids … they tend to forget about the pain quicker than adults do. But they hurt every bit as much.I'm praying for his rapid healing and a quick lessening of any discomfort at all. Kids really do bounce right back. It's just that you feel so sorry for them when they're hurting like crazy. As far as pain goes, every surgery is different. I've had 17 trips to the surgery suite for one type of surgery and another, and some of them had little pain. But some of them had HUMONGOUS. Keep us posted on how things are going. I will continue to pray.Marj

Oh, the poor little guy – I'm sorry to hear it turned out worse than you anticipated. I think the best you can do is tell him honestly that you told him what the doctors told you. And tell him you're sorry he's in so much pain – even that you would take the pain for him if you could. I will pray that he continues to trust you. I have so many times asked God to cover where I lack in wisdom or foresight. You made the best decision possible and God can use it for good. God bless,Jen
