~Two of my favorite things are knitting and reading and I love sharing my projects and current reads here. I would love for you to join me each month and share what you are knitting (or crocheting) and reading too! Post your photo(s) on your blog or on Instagram (#yarnalong) and then share a link below to either your blog or Instagram post!~ (this post contains affiliate links.)
I mentioned my plan to start reading the Mitford books on Instagram, and so many people commented to recommend them. They were right! I don’t know that I would have enjoyed At Home in Mitford ten years ago, but it is exactly the sort of book that I need right now. It’s not so eventful that I feel compelled to stay up too late reading or neglect my chores to read during the day, but I look forward to it like a cup of hot tea. It’s cozy, warm, and just perfect. I’m enjoying it so, so much.
We’re in the midst of a crazy heat wave here in Virginia (and of course our a.c. is malfunctioning) so I’ve been sock knitting! Anything else is too hot on my lap. I’m almost finished with the first of a pair of Will O’ The Wisp socks.
Is it hot where you live? Are you knitting anyway?
(And Happy Fourth of July to all of you in the U.S.!)

Oh my! I just recently discovered the Mitford books as well! I’m currently reading At Home… and love the writer’s quirky little insights into the days of Father Tim and the unique personalities in this town.

Love, love, love ALL of the Mitford books and Father Tim books. Have read them over and over again each year starting in January. I really like listening to them, also, on the Overdrive app through our local library. The guy who reads them is very easy to listen to and I can really sink into them while I go for daily walks. So much gospel living!

I read the first Mitford book in July of 2014 and continued on for the next several months, I didn’t want to read them 10 years earlier but found in 2014 it was time to read them. It was such a refreshing change to what I was reading at the time. Goodness I just had the AC repairman here last week, tis the season for AC troubles. I am currently crocheting an afghan for my great niece who is 5. It’s odd because I usually don’t crochet large items in the summer months here in Florida even with AC the yarn seems to be too hot on the lap though so far it isn’t bothering me at all.

Hi Ginny! I’m in Maryland and yes, the heat is a killer. I love your blog and have always wanted to learn how to knit. Do you have any recommendations on where to begin?
Leslie F says
Hayley,
I’m a long time crocheter but this past winter I decided to take the plunge into knitting – I just plugged ‘how to knit’ into the search bar on YouTube and found everything I needed. When I found something I didn’t understand, or needed more help with, I’d just re-watch or search for more specifics. My first project was a sweater and it was perfect! What did we do before YouTube?
Pom Pom says
Yes, it’s hot here, too. Our AC is working though, so knitting inside is all good! Oh, how I loved Mitford. It is so fresh and sweet. Father Tim has the best heart.
I love your socks, Ginny!

Hello Ginny, I am a person who does not do well in the heat. Thank goodness for air conditioning. I am reading book two of a trilogy. “The Fairest of Them All”. I am looking forward to book 3. Have a safe holiday.
HAPPY JULY 4th

The heat here has been unbearable. The Air Conditioner is on all day and night. The humidity is just as bad. I am just starting to read “Galway” Bay by Mary pat Kelly. My two sisters have read it and loved the book. Keep cool in all this heat.
Have a HAPPY JULY 4th.

Hi Ginny I am finishing the last book in the “Adventures In The Northwoods “series. Very hot here in New York. Too hot to do anything but stay in the air condition.
HAPPY 4TH OF JULY

We’re in the midst of a heat wave here in Yorkshire and I am loving it! I suspect it’s significantly hotter where you are, though. I’m knitting a shawl, but just a doll-sized trial version for now. It’s definitely cool enough here to knit the full size version in the evenings, which is what I’ll be doing next week. Enjoy your socks, and your Mitford books. X

I’m in Ohio and it’s predicted to get to the low 90’s. We’ve been doing fine with ceiling fans and haven’t turned on the AC. We also have a lot of large trees around the house to keep it shaded. God bless the farmer who planted the eight trees around our house 70 years ago.
I don’t knit anything interesting in the summer; just cotton washcloths. I save interesting knitting and quilting for cold weather and long evenings.
Martha says
Yeah the heat here is bad and it’s keeping us indoors more often than normal. It doesn’t affect what I’m knitting but that’s because I can escape to the AC. 🙂 A friend recently recommended the “At Home in Mitford” series to me because I’ve never read them either (tried to read them about 10 yrs ago and couldn’t get into the first book) but I agree, I think I would enjoy them more now. I’ve been planning to try them again! My friend said they are a good happy peaceful escape, a good kind of book of my season of life right now. Anyway, happy 4th of July! And hope the AC is working again soon.

I love your posts and am glad to have found you. I don’t say much, but since I live in Virginia too, it is to darn hot here. I am currently rereading the Silmarillion by Tolkien, and doing a podcast study along on it while I knit a shrug for next fall.

hm, I just got off the phone with my aunt who has to replace her AC and furnace. I hope mine holds out 🙂
I cannot wait for the heat wave to be finished, I’m wilting!!
