~ Two of my favorite things are knitting and reading (though not at the same time!), and the evidence of this often shows up in my photographs. I love seeing what other people are knitting and reading as well. So, what are you knitting or crocheting right now? What are you reading? Take a photo and share it either on your blog or on Flickr. Leave a link below to share your photo with the rest of us! ~
My Simmer Dim is coming along so quickly! This is a great one skein project and I am really enjoying it. I’ve been reading more than usual this week, mainly because I love the book I’m reading, So Big, by Edna Ferber. If you like Willa Cather, then I do believe that you will like Edna Ferber. Of course this is the first book of hers that I have read, but that is my impression thus far.

Ginny,
That brilliant blue is just such a pretty burst of color in the middle of winter.
Thanks for your kind comment on my blog, it meant a lot to me.
Love,
Taryn

Your Simmer Dim is just lovely – gorgeous color.
My Antonia was one of about 5 books I read in high school that I h-a-t-e-d and I have not given Willa Cather another chance since then, but seeing her name come up through various Yarn Along links I know I need to give her another try now that I’m an adult. Some books, although able to be read by young people, will not be grasped by young people. I have a feeling that is true of Willa Cather. So maybe I would like So Big too.

Ginny- I read So Big about 5 years ago when my brother passed it on to me after reading it as part of his coursework for his Ph.d in history (his focus was agricultural history). At that time I worked at a historic home of a late nineteenth century industrialist from Illinois. The luxurious lifestyle I read about in the diaries, letters, and seeing all the pictures of this family I felt could have been transposed into the lives of certain characters in So Big. I loved how the characters were so real that I could picture them as friends of the real people I studied at the museum. What a great book!
I would also have to recommend for the happy reading list L.M. Montgomery’s The Story Girl and The Golden Road. I like these even better than Anne or The Blue Castle. I feel they capture the joy or childhood in the smallest of things.
Thanks for sharing all these titles. I have added a bunch to my library queue. I am always looking for happy books. The older I get I think the more sensitive I am to the darkness in books.

I loved Willa Cather when I was in my twenties, but I don’t think I’ve read her in a good 10 years. I will have to try her again this year and make sure I still love her. And I’ll have to check out So Big too!

I want to like Willa Cather. I really do. Once when we were driving through Nebraska, I thought it would be fun to listen to the audiotape of “O, Pioneers.” It was the most depressing 2 hours of the trip, until we finally just turned it off. I need to try again. I think I was just in a place in my life where she didn’t speak to me. I’m older and wiser now. It could be different.

Well, her books aren’t particularly happy, not so much in what happens, but in the tone of her novels. I think there is a deep beauty there though. I also think they are best read, versus listened to. I tried listening to Song of the Lark on audio, and just couldn’t get into it. Eventually I just read the book and loved it. My Antonia is the favorite I think of her novels, maybe try that one?

Sometimes I do actually knit and read at the same time! I’m currently knitting an Aran coat when I’m at home and crocheting a blanket when I’m in the car (as a passenger, I hasten to add).

So Big was made into a great movie with Barbara Stanwyck and Giant was also made into a wonderful movie with Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor & James Dean. SO GOOD!

Too bad I swore off shawls. There is no way I’d attempt another one anytime soon, so I enjoy it vicariously through you. 🙂
