I may have overdone it with the photos this time, so I won’t say much. On Friday, Seth and Keats had their piano lessons early so that we could leave for Big Meadows after lunch. After lunch became four o’clock. We didn’t reach the meadow until nearly seven. The kids were hoping the blueberries would be ripe. I was hoping the fawns would be out frolicking. We didn’t get our wishes, but it was beautiful nonetheless. Driving two and a half hours just to reach Big Meadows is entirely worth it, if only to close my eyes and breathe the air. We’ll have to go back in a couple of weeks to try again.
p.s. On our trip we saw two bears, a dozen or so adult deer, one fawn, a garter snake, one raccoon, and one owl that swooped in front of our van on the way home.

Beautiful trip! Thank you for sharing. I am the same way! I have my husband drive over two hours to a place I love called Shelburne Falls in MA. There is a famous Bridge of Flowers!!! The Meadows are on my list!!! The book sounds fun and funny! 🙂

That bear sighting is too wonderful. Too bad the berries weren’t ripe. But at least you know there are going to be berries!

Quick jello from Norway. I read your blog regularly, but don’t comment often.. Your blog is an inspiration.
But the bears- please tell more about the bears. How far away were they? Can they be aggressive? In Norway, bears Are very rare and hardly ever seen. And even though they’re hardly ever aggressive towards humans Im terrified of them!!

Beautiful pics of a beautiful family! I’m expecting my fourth baby and you give me so much inspiration!
Can you tell me what camera do you use?
Ginny says
Thanks, Sara! I use a Nikon D600. Congratulations on the new baby!
Emily says
It makes me smile, Ginny, reading how this meadow gives you such pleasure. I’m glad you were able to go if only for a short time. Wow…you actually were able to photograph a bear!
Andee says
Oh I loved all the pictures! Tell those bears to stay far away from your honey!!!
Leigh says
I can see why you love Big Meadows so much, what a beautiful place! And those bear sightings and owl swoops, so thrilling to see and yet terrifying too:) Have a lovely week Ginny. xo
Laura says
Wow, you must really love Big Meadows if it takes you a couple hours to get there and you still go! I guess I have taken it for granted when we have passed through there. This is a funny question but anytime I see tall grass and meadows… and deer… I think of ticks. How does your family deal with them? Do you put any sprays on, do checks every night, anything else?? Living in this area, I just really worry about them. Thanks for sharing!!

It was not too many pictures. Thanks.

Omigosh, you need a bear warning system! I don’t mind boys holding snakes that aren’t poisonous, but bears give me the willies. They’re deadly. How close was that? It looks straight out of Blueberries for Sal.
Veronika says
I’m curious, what makes you think that bears are deadly? I live in the north where bears are sharing habitat alongside humans without any deadly encounters.

I’m new to your blog. Got on it from Ann Voskamp. Love it so far. I was wondering if you know what the white flowers are in the 22nd picture? I saw some on my walk today and didn’t remember seeing them before. I did recognize the butterfly weed. It’s blooming here in Iowa also.

My day is so much happier after reading your posts and viewing your photographs. I admire you and your family and your love for one another and the outdoors and things like pine needle upside down cake and how you enjoy nature and crafting and cooking from scratch. I could go on and on but I would sound too mushy or intimate. May God continue to bless you all and may you, Ginny, continue to brighten my days with Small Things.
Judy says
It would not be possible to have too many photographs of you all in such a beautiful meadow! Thank you for sharing them.
Ruby says
Always beautiful. The photos of you and Silas are perfection. I just love your flower photography. Sometimes the bending of a stem tells a story itself.

all those long sleeves, sigh….Autumn is where I want to be, soon. Lucky you to have spotted the bear and had the camera ready. I haven’t captured one yet (with the camera of course). So happy that you visited there. Funny, I thought Big Meadow was the name you coined it…..now I see it IS the name of your place.

I just got back from the weekend in Swope, VA and I was amazed at the wildflowers growing along the road sides and mountain sides. In MD our climate is similar to yours but we don’t have the wildflowers here growing in ditches. On the drive home it occurred to me why. Our farm fields are completely filled with corn or beans right now and our ditches are brown due to the round up sprayed by the farmers. So sad.
Dawn says
Oops Swoope, VA…typing too fast.

I’m glad you were able to visit your spot Ginny and I hope one day to met up with you there, my sister is just down the road.
