~ Two of my favorite things are knitting and reading, and the evidence of this often shows up in my photographs. I love seeing what other people are knitting and reading as well. So, what are you knitting or crocheting right now? What are you reading? Take a photo and share it either on your blog or on Flickr. Leave a link below to share your photo with the rest of us! ~
I read The Orchardist over the last week after seeing it on one of Karen’s Yarn Along posts. I thought it a unique, moving book and I was pretty engrossed by it. This is not a light, happy read, but a sensitive one. I found myself a bit haunted by the story and the characters after finishing it. I would recommend it, if you like to read an epic tragedy every now and then. If you are especially sensitive, I wouldn’t read it because there is some difficult subject matter (Karen warned me, but I felt up to it.) I have taken up with Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility since finishing The Orchardist, ready for something light.
I still have several baby knits on the needles, but am taking a little detour to knit a Botanical Cowl. The pattern is very simple and easy to execute with interruption, which is perfect for me. I am already more than halfway through it, and hope to finish it up this week. I’m knitting it in Madelinetosh Pashmina, in probably my favorite colorway: filigree.
I almost forgot to mention: In case you missed yesterday’s post: I updated my Sunday Sweater pattern to include sizes 8 and 10. I also updated my Simple Newborn Hat with a Touch of Lace (what was I thinking with that crazy long name? I am so tired of typing it!) and you can now download a pdf of the pattern from the original post.

Oh my gosh- I was just about to send you a comment recommending The Orchardist as your next read (it reminded me of “So Big” so I thought of you)- then I thought, ‘Well, she’s such a big reader (despite so many kids!), maybe she’s already read it…”. Sure enough after using your search bar, turns out you have! Anyways, I loved this book (& your blog!) so much I really had to post this comment. The Orchardist was tough at the end, wasn’t it? I have trouble with any book that doesn’t have a suuuper happy ending and so I did have a bit of a time processing this one. It felt so beautifully (& sadly) real to me. But because I loved this book SO much, I am oddly comforted by the fact that you’ve read it too! -Just had to comment on this as I think I’ve added this book to my top 3 reads! ps. your blog is such a joy- thank you 😉

It is so funny, I saw Karen’s Yarn Along post as well and thought “The Orchardist” sounded fascinating and downloaded it to my Kindle. That’s what I love about the Yarn Alongs – you get knitting and reading ideas! Beautiful colours in the cowl, can’t wait to see it finished.

Really lovely cowl and the colour is just gorgeous ! Enjoy Sense and Sensibilities, Jane Austen is always great to turn to for easy light reading, its what makes her timeless I guess.

Your cowl color is seriously amazing. Someday, when I knit something for myself, I hope to splurge on a Tosh yarn to make it worth the effort of knitting something bigger than size 4! haha!
I love your newborn hat and it has become my go-to for my friends’ girl babes. It knits up so fast and is so elegant yet simple!

that color is gorgeous! It’s going to make a beautiful cowl!

I truly love the cowl, especially the yarn you chose! Thanks for the warning about the book, I do like a good saga every now and again…but, I also like knowing before I begin that it is a bit tragic.
Erin @ Mama in Progress says
I really love that colorway, Ginny. It’s a wonderful match for the pattern. 🙂

Seriously loving all your baby knits 🙂 I am currently making diaper covers, and they are so cute! And I wanted to let you know that this little hat pattern was how I first found your blog, now a few years ago:)

I don’t know what you were thinking ;), but I love your little hat so much and it is the one I always make for new mother’s.
Are you still up for next week sometime? Let me know what day is good for you.
Ginny says
Yes, of course! Email me so we can come up with a plan!

And-if you don’t mind, will you download that little hat pdf and read through it? It’s just two pages, but I would love to get a second opinion on the (small) changes I made.

What a pretty cowl! I love your choice in yarn, I think it really makes the cowl!

Oh, btw, was meaning to mention to you, since you love bees, that I found some prayers for bees… just an FYI! http://eroosje.blogspot.com/2013/07/bees-and-praying-for-them.html

Thank you for the hat pattern! Lovely!

gosh you are a quick reader! Glad you liked it, I like how at the end the whole story lingered in my mind. I was quietly moved by the simple ending. I’m hoping she writes another book! I haven’t knit with the filigree colorway yet 🙂

There were some late nights reading this week! I sat and cried when I finished it, which was a bit awkward because I was at the boys’ piano lessons!!

Such a beautiful cowl! One day my children will be grown and I shall buy myself some Madeline Tosh yarn in a scrumptious colorway and knit something for MEEEEE! Gorgeous stuff…
Thank you for the larger sizes on the Sunday Sweater, too…Gemma is growing, and I want her to always have one that fits her!

The cowl is lovely! Your colorway is quite beautiful. I have some MadTosh sport in Well Water that I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with.
