We wanted to do something special to celebrate the end of September and the beginning of October, but hadn’t planned anything. So, Jonny and the boys carried our farm table outside and we ate our soup on the back patio this evening.
I don’t know if I’ve ever said so, and I am not one to name favorites, but October is my favorite month. I’ll have to ask Jonny what his favorite is. I am not sure if I’ll get an honest answer though, because we were married in October, so he might think that’s the right answer.
I’m going to ask him real quick…
Okay, he answered, “December: because December 3oth is the day I celebrate the birth of my favorite person.”
My birthday is December 30th.
I’m going to ask again, because I don’t think that was the truth…
He says, “I don’t know. They’re all pretty nice if you think about it.”
Yes, I agree. But, I am going to push him to narrow it down to one…

He’s not doing very well. He’s going on and on about why he likes this month or that one. All he can come up with is that he doesn’t really love summer. I could have sworn we’ve talked about this before and agreed that October is both of our favorites. Anyway, I kind of think he’s forgetting our anniversary at the moment, because otherwise I am sure he’d say October.
Whatever the case: we ate outside, the mosquitoes didn’t find us, and while it started to sprinkle minutes after the table was carried out, it passed without ever amounting to anything.

My kids have been experimenting with the word “ain’t” lately. They don’t even know how to use it. Larkspur just told me that she wants to knit a scarf. I told her that scarves take forever. With a mischievous grin, she responded, “Well that ain’t matter.” I just raised my eyebrows. The boys have to put twenty five cents in a jar on the mantle for the poor box at church every time they say it. It’s not a big deal I know, I just don’t want it to become a habit. I am, after all, their English teacher.
(That last photo is Silas’ fake pouty face. His older siblings have taught him well.)

Hi Ginny! Very cute little bib on baby. Did you…make it??
By the way, I really like October as well:)

Well I did know your birthday was in December, so close to mine, but I don’t think I knew your anniversary was in October, ours is on the 25th.
The girls have been saying aint too! And I’m pretty sure they picked it up from books like Farmer Boy and Little House on the Prairie! (Maybe not the little house books exactly, but there are “Rose books” about Laura, Almanzo, and their daughter, and aint is definitely said in there a lot. Sometimes I just don’t reply when they use the word, then they have to repeat themselves correctly… Look, I don’t even know how to spell “ain’t”, I left out the apostrophe…

I enjoy your blog very much and regularly read it and eel lucky to be able to see glimpses of lives on another continent with different weather (but still similar seasons) and wildlife (snakes!!! Eek! Imagine?!) your family is beautiful and spirited I think, and your hand on the rudder, (as it were) is just perfect it seems…thanks for this blog! And your lovely cardigan design has joined my revelry queue- it’s delightful and just perfectly what I’m after at present.
I may be Too late leaving this comment for you to see it, but I’d like to ask if you the denim cut-offs/ clam-digger shorts that Beatrix is wearing? They are very cute and timeless- Id like to try making some for my Beatrix (aged 3 1/2)…

That pout is hilarious!

So cute and so funny. I’ve recently been explaining the word ain’t to my kids because they saw me reading the book “Folks, This Ain’t Normal.” Great book by the way. They’d never heard the word ain’t before and find it fascinating. My 5 year old keeps calling the book “Folks, This Egg Ain’t Normal” because of the picture on the front.

Don’t you just love kids! They find that one thing that will absolutely drive you nuts, and then replay it a thousand and one times just to watch you go ballistic! Makes me laugh.
What a great idea to have dinner out. Looking to get a special place for us like that in our backyard. Nothing like eating out in nature!
Diane says
Oh Ginny, thanks for the laugh! “Ain’t” isn’t part of this english teacher’s vocabulary, either!
EG says
A lovely picnic! And I like the snapshot (in words) of you and Jonny interacting. 🙂 And I love that Trudy!
Kim says
The perfect way to welcome October!!!

Oh I love your table and benches! A big farm table is on my dream list, but our little one works just fine for now. I love Silas’ face in the last two pictures, what a cutie he is! How old is he? He looks about the same age as Dominic (17 months and about a week). 🙂 And October is definitely my favorite month too!
Wendy says
I just noticed your table yesterday–where did you get it?
Fall is my absolute favorite.
I cringe just thinking about what our youngest is picking up from the three older–they have many positive qualities to share, but whining and pouting has seemed prevalent lately.
Larkspur’s use of ‘ain’t’ is classic!
Ginny says
We actually traded an old mantle for it at a shop here years ago. There is also a store just south of us that sells big farm tables and benches, and that is where we got the benches.
Jenn says
Good correcting of the word “ain’t”. I would correct it too. Lol. And that is too cute. I loved the pictures, especially where the dog is poking its head out from under the table. 🙂

Silas seems to enjoy his audience 🙂 He is adorable and I think he loves doing the pout.
Sharron says
What’s really bad is when your children correct their grandparents for saying “ain’t”! That didn’t go over very well. They are from East TN, that is proper English! LOL
Ginny says
We watched the first season of the Bates family’s show, and noticed that they use the word ain’t regularly. They live in East TN too!
Erin says
Love they pouty face. They learn quick!

you guys are funny! i am not sure if i have a favorite month, but i do love fall the most. 🙂

Funnnnnny! That family of yours is beautiful and funny and sweet.
Also, when I ask my husband questions like that, he’ll say, “whichever is the right answer,” and beam at me.
Sonja says
Yours is a marriage that will last to eternity! What a wonderful example to the world. 🙂
And October is great! I love it, but I just can’t bring myself to make it a favorite. I find naming favorites to be so limiting and somewhat claustrophobic. 🙂 It seems like with every season I love it as much as the last.
Rosemary says
October is definitely my favorite month, for more reasons than I can list. 🙂 My husband proposed to me in October.

And today, you win the Most Darling Family in the World award :).

So sweet 🙂 The soup looks delicious– do you mind sharing the recipe?
Ginny says
Jonny just asked me why I called it soup. I told him it was because my brain wasn’t working and I forgot how many l’s are in the word chili. It was just a basic chili with ground beef, onions, tomatoes, and kidney beans. I don’t follow a recipe for it.

That Silas is cuter every time I see him. My anniversary, and favorite month, is Oct as well. It also holds the birthdays of both of my stepsons so it ends up being a busy month! I hope Oct treats you well. It looks like you’re off to a great start!
Barbara says
Silas is such a beautiful baby (child). I am afraid he would get away with just about anything with me. 😉
We love to eat outdoors too. In the summer our patio table is more used than the kitchen. Jonny should build you a picnic table. Whoops. Sorry Jonny. I am trying to get my husband to build me an outdoor stove: http://www.rootsimple.com/2007/11/our-rocket-stove.html
Ginny says
We really do need some outdoor furniture, but this month Jonny has a bathroom to gut 🙁 I’d like an outdoor stove too!
Tracey says
October is my favorite month too. I like it because it gives me an excuse to decorate with orange and my guys don’t complain.
Ain’t is a word I wish would disappear from our language ; my children at one time or another all tried it out, but it is not allowed to be spoken in my home.
meghann says
October is my favorite month, too! I think it might have been because my birthday is in October, at first, but now I love it because it is the beginning of autumn. We would have been married in October, but both of our birthdays are in October & we thought that would be too many important days in one thirty-one-day span. Sometimes I still regret that decision…
I love your photos, as always. I could look at pictures of that beautiful baby all day long. 🙂 xo
W-S Wanderings says
You are a hoot! Surely the only reason he didn’t think of October is because he is IN October. You know, kinda like forgetting to count yourself. 🙂
Beautiful photos.
Lori B says
It looks more like a “What you talkin’ ’bout, Willis?” face 🙂
Casey says
So cute! That pout rocks. He needs to add an eyebrow scrunch and he’d be laughin’. (Well not literally, you understand…)
