I feel like we just had the first official, unofficial weekend of spring. I filled my kitchen windowsill with mint cuttings to celebrate. The kids rescued a bunch of frog eggs from a big puddle. Beatrix isn’t the least grossed out by their sliminess. I remember rescuing tadpoles as a child, but I don’t think I ever touched the slimy eggs. Right now they are sitting in buckets of pond water on the front porch. We’ve successfully made it to frog stage before, but I am thinking these just need to be moved to the tiny spring fed pond in the woods.
(not our cat, but a cute one.)
Losing an hour to daylight savings time is never fun. Despite having changed our clocks Sunday morning, we still didn’t manage to make it to Mass on time. The five p.m. service was so packed that we ended up outside on the sidewalk along with all the other late people, and those who undoubtedly missed the noon service because they hadn’t changed their clocks yet. I remember missing church on the first day of daylight savings as a child. I also remember being happy when we would pull up to the empty church and realize our mistake. Maybe I shouldn’t admit to that, but I was a kid and I thought church was boring.
I am declaring this week home and garden week. Well, garden, then home. We’re taking the week off from school. I don’t have enough free time during the day to give lessons and plant my spring garden. I confess that I still haven’t made an official garden plan, nor have I ordered any new seeds. (edited to add: I just placed my seed order) For some reason, despite realizing my tardiness every single year, I never can remember to start making plans until I start seeing the signs of spring outside. At that point, I am already behind. There will be Saturday Garden Journal here on Saturday and I do hope that all goes as I am planning and I have plenty of little notes to share.
Jonny is signed up for his first Tough Mudder. Have any of you or your loved ones ever participated in this madness?
p.s. Last week I pulled my Grandmother’s old Scrabble game down out of my closet. I love the note she attached, who knows how many decades ago. My kids were threatened with bad things if they tamper with it.

I wanted to say that the word grandmother is signed in exactly my mothers handwriting! So much so that it causes an ache in my heart to see and hear her. Love your babys nappy and all things spring!!!

loving that brown workhorse fitted on your cute baby’s bum! =)
lovely photos.

We planted our first row of peas on Sunday, in wind and cold, and have been hovering over the broccoli and kale starts by the sunny window in the garage, waiting, wanting for enough leaves to set them out. Just delurking to say “thank you” for this lovely space and send best wishes to you and yours and, this week, to your garden too.

I love old grandmother writings- occasionally I bump into Granny Hatty’s words here.
Spring is the time (plus fall, of course) that I really miss living in a four-season place

My husband is actually doing his first tough mudder in April. It sounds insane. He is doing the one in Ohio. Where is the one you are doing? I

We’re behind in our garden plans, too, but hope to get to it this week…we’ll see. And I just have to share that we own the very same old, old, old Scrabble version (although not having belonged to either of our grandmas). What a treasure. And the note…priceless. 🙂 Blessings, ~Lisa

Dear Ginny…Oh, those slimy, squishy treasures sure do make a lasting impression of childhood! I love your idea of garden notes, but I began posting mine on Mondays, but I’d love to link up then. It’s a fabulous way to keep track of the season. And I have never heard of Tough Mudder but I skipped over there from your link…Ca-Ra-Zee! Oh, Jonny, good luck fella!

YES! Spring! and TOUGH MUDDER! The craziest thing in the world, but, so fun and nutty. Good luck to him! Is he part of a team?

Are my eyes playing tricks on me or is Silas really wearing a jumper that matches his nappy seams? (or vice-versa)
It’s gorgeous!!!! The sheer idea of it is making me laugh, I don’t know exactly why but I love it!

Planting what a wonderful week you will have!
My husband just signed up for his first Tough Mudder also! Guess we will see what happens!

I doodled out a plan this weekend, but still haven’t done anything about getting seeds. I think that puts you a step ahead!
sarahlcc says
Today, we hunt for frogs (or eggs, we’re not picky) and build a chicken coop!

How wonderful that you have a Scrabble game for your kids to play with that you and other generations played with too.
Loved the previous ‘pep talk’ post. I think everyone feels like that sometimes. Especially we homeschooling Moms, although in my case even my youngest is back off to university soon.

We have a tiny garden and we only start thinking around the end of May, so if it makes you feel better you are ahead of me 😉 I have my scrabble game with my high scores back when I was a teenager 😀

Oh,, my hubby has been itching to do a Tough Mudder! Some day!
I love the plan to forgo schooling for the garden, because really they will learn so much!

i would’ve been that kid in the backseat secretly delighted the parking lot was empty, church doors closed. i think it’s just part of being a kid.
and tough muddler. never heard of it before but wow! sounds insanely crazy and still fun.

We (hubby and I) were going to do the tough mudder last year! But I was about 4 months pregnant with baby #5… so we decided to forgo the madness. It looks like a blast, and a great excuse to get in shape… but babies have a wonderful way of disrupting the best laid adventure plans! But those gummy smiles, bald head, fat little feet, and dimply thighs are so very worth it! (Well, the baby’s dimply thighs…;P) Good luck Johnny! We’ll be rooting for you!

We play scrabble alot around here too. My kids love that my husband cheats and tries to pass the silliest words ever heard. We loved tadpoles but on our farm here we the only place they could hatch is in the pond and the catfish would eat them. I love the time change, though it messes me up for a few days I love that I can stay outside until late. Here was my garden update from this weekend…I’m sure after you see my horrid weeds, your garden will seem lots easier lol. http://crunchycatholicmomma.blogspot.com/2012/03/weekly-farm-update-where-heart-is.html

We do also have spring coming! I love this time….I feel like I am waking up!

We love the workhorse dipes! They are daddy diapers here as he is not so good with the prefolds and flats. With 3 in diapers I can’t afford any fancy fitteds and pockets/AIO just do cut it for my heavy wetters and our hard water.

I have my Grandmother’s scrabble game. In it is a paper of top scores over the years. It has all of our names in it at one point or another. We used it for our now grown kids and now we will use it for our 8 year old too. All high scores and family names are carefully added to the list!
Kimberly says
That is very funny…I just talked with my husband yesterday and we decided I should just take some time off from school to spring clean and work in the yard, too 🙂 So, we’ll do a little bit of school in the morning but our main goal is the house and the garden.
Good luck…hope you get lots done!

I haven’t laughed so hard in ages as I did at your admission of joy at pulling up to the empty church lot as a child. I remember the same thing. (And I felt the same way. Church *is* boring, when you’re a child; nothing wrong with admitting it.) Happy springtime! xo
Ellen says
Oh I think we’re on the same wavelength – I just posted about little hints of springtime. I remember searching for peepers thinking they were the cutest little frogs, but the slimy stuff? No, thank you. I love your grandmother’s note on that very important game. You couldn’t possibly spell with missing letters…well, maybe some of my children could. Up to this year, I’ve always disliked daylight savings because we lost an hour of sleep. My husband always looks at it like gaining an hour of light (he’s an early riser, so it doesn’t matter to him). This year, my perspective has changed. I’m looking forward to that extra hour of light too.
Linda says
Oh wow! That Scrabble game has brought back memories. My mom has the exact same scrabble box, dark blue with the printing on the inside cover. We used to play scrabble when we were small, I haven’t played for years. I bought one for our children to learn to play this weekend. Thank you for helping me remember this lovely game from all those years ago.

Eww frog eggs. I am excited to see how your plans come together this week for your garden. I am hoping to start one myself this year. Have a wonderful day.

We had a lovely warm and yard inviting weekend here as well but, alas, this week promises the spring showers that you hear so much about so there will be no playing in the garden for me. I love the last picture of the boys playing scrabble. Great stollen moment.
Peace~

My daughter wants to do the Tough Mudder and asked me to go with her; I just laughed. Good luck to your husband!
Have fun planting your garden. I am working on restoring my herb bed this week, it is in such sad shape.

What a wonderful treasure!
I can remember gathering at my grandma’s house for a meal and once everyone had eaten and the kitchen had been cleaned, everyone would sit around the table for a game of scrabble. I never got to play, but my Aunt would always let me sit in her lap and help.
The Tough Mudder sounds insane. Wish I was brave enough to attempt it. I bookmarked the site to show my brother.
Looks like you’ve chosen an awesome week to begin planning and preparing your garden- it’s supposed to be beautiful all week.
Have an amazing day!!!
