I’ve been sewing for practically three days straight and I have almost nothing to show for it. I have become well acquainted with my seam ripper and it has been sad. Somehow, Larkspur’s birthday dress did get finished. I am not going to dwell on the hours I spent making it and the fact that really, it’s just a plain boring dress, and not a pattern I would ever sew again. Lark chose the fabric and she is mostly happy with the dress. I am not surprising her with it as she made it clear that her birthday dress is not to be one of her presents, but what she wears while opening presents. The second sewing project that has been occupying me is more complicated, and won’t be ready for Lark’s birthday tomorrow. She doesn’t mind waiting.
A fox visited our compost bins today making me wish once again that I owned a good zoom lens. We’ll just have to make do with the couple of photos I took through the window and then cropped. Our neighbor claims he saw a baby fox on the property adjacent ours recently. Where are your babies mama? We want to meet them.
Back to the sewing machine. Bleh.
p.s. Today Beatrix chose red marker to decorate her face. Some of the photos I took of her are really creepy looking. I won’t burden you with them.
what is it about kids and markers???? My grandson colored his little brother’s ears black with marker—and then they both wrote all over each other’s bellies. (Honestly, I laughed til I cried–but my daughter said it was awful trying to get off!)
We have a fox that has visited us near our garden beds. What fun to know that spring is happening in little thickets just like in Bambi. We are traveling to Amherst County Virginia this weekend for our spring break – to my folks’ farm. There will be lambs and sheep shearing and possibly a few kids born (goats)! Many blessings this week. You are such a wonderful mama to sew so determiningly (a word?)
Dear Ginny,
I love that children are so specific about birthdays. It makes it special for them I think.
It has been years since we saw a fox, in fact our younger children have never seen one as they do not live in Tasmania
Looking forward to seeing your sewing. I always love your garden posts just wish I remember to look at them in our spring not our Autumn as it is now, lol
God Bless
Gae
ps. so often I see our Arwen with similar looking hair and activities as your Beatrix. I think of you when I see those circumstances with Arwen
Larkspur has been looking so grown up lately!
Foxes are pretty, aren’t they?
What a cute fox, so pretty. Larkspur sounds like my oldest, except I can’t sew, so I wouldn’t make her dress. My kids color themselves with markers all the time. Good thing we keep washable ones in the house.
But those compost bins! Can you tell us about them? They’re beautiful! And easy access—for man and beast! I wish I could be part of your garden-along, but our gardens are still blanketed by snow.
Does tapping a maple tree count?
Had to laugh about the creepy photos! She sure likes to decorate herself doesn’t she?
Happy Birthday Larkspur! Hope her day is wonderful!! Bea is just so funny… her face reminds me of the time my nephew used a bingo dauber to decorate his brothers face while he was sleeping. Not only his face but his feet too. So funny! That girl sure keeps you busy but what FUN memories for you! LOVE the fox photos, how cool is that!
There’s something so michieviously story-book-magical about foxes <3
What a beautiful yellow ochre sweater…and your funny red painted face daughter! Those fox photos are lovely. ♥ Yes, I understand what you mean about the seam ripper. I do love sewing, though.
i forgot to ask, have you seen the fox and the child yet? it is a stunning film, i think you and the children would love.

omg heehee hee, that girl, i LOVE her. and can i come to see the fox(s)??! i’ll bring my lenses, we can share! and today must be the birthday day!! happy birthday larkspur and happy birth day to you too mama. xxx
Isn’t that fox gorgeous! I saw one running across the country behind our house a few months ago. I was so excited. That was the first and only time I’ve ever seen a fox in ‘real life’.
Your B is a quite a little individual, isn’t she? So funny!
Blessings,
G
oh my gosh! that fox is amazing. he looks just like the ones in story books. 🙂 how exciting.
sorry about the sewing misadventures. i have yet to try and sew anything. maybe some day.
That picture of Bea made me laugh–thanks for the smile this morning!
Thank you, Bea, for making me grin yet again! My, my, Ginny…I wonder if she will ever outgrow the wild face-paint and haircuts…I had to get to nineteen or twenty years old before I did!
I love foxes!!!! We see them quite often in our area.
Wishing Larkspur a wonderful birthday.
1. You have the most beautiful compost bins I have ever seen.
2. Has your daughter ever read the book “Purple, green and yellow” by Robert Munsch? You might want to pre-read it, but every time you show a picture of her painted face, I think of that book.
We just saw a fox in our yard yesterday. First time ever! My daughter was THRILLED to say the least.
Good luck with your projects.
A big Happy Birthday to Larkspur!
Happy birthday Larkspur!
Your pics gave me a big smile today! Love the make-up! If only I would look that good after my work. Happy Birthday to your little one, Larkspur. Enjoy them, they grow up so fast.
be careful of foxes! they’re quick. I interned at a nature center in college & caged ones snatched ducks & chickens quick & made them DISAPPEAR! Quickly! I don’t think they harm children, but small animals, etc.
Happy birthday Larkspur!
And Happy Birthday Larkspur!!!!!
The fox is beautiful- like Reynard in The Tomten and The Fox! Post the pictures of Bea- she is such a sweet spirit, she always makes me smile! I saw the red marker and had a good chuckle!!!
Beautiful fox!
The Fox is so Fantastic!
I adore foxes, what a precious moment that you were able to capture one on camera, so special.
Thank you for sharing.
Linda
Wow, that is a beautiful, gigantic fox! I only witness baby foxes by me, and adults that look scraggly and unwell. This one’s a beauty!
Hope your sewing tribulations improve as you move forward with the second project!
Adorable fox photo.
The fox pictures are so beautiful – how exciting to have seen her. Foxes hold a special place in my heart, as a pair of them circled our house the day my daughter was born. I sewed foxes onto her birthday crown.
I feel for your sewing frustrations – though I am looking forward to seeing the dress, even if it’s simple ~ I like simple! 🙂 And I got such a giggle out of Beatrix’s face! Mine has done that a few times, too, though never with red!
Foxes are so cool. I like a distant photo – it adds a little mystique;)
Happy birthday Larkspur. Mama made dresses are always special, no matter what!
What a sweet little fox. I couldn’t believe Beatrix’s face in that photo! I literally laughed out loud. What a mischevious little sweetie. She always makes me smile. I can’t believe she was just a baby when I started reading your blog! How time flies!
I am sure the dress looks beautiful. Can’t wait to see photos 🙂
Don’t be sad. I sew plenty of plain boring dresses. Right now I am sewing an apron dress with fairy fabric, quite colorful and fancy, and I am wishing it was something more plain and simple.
And doesn’t that wonderful embroidery companion book you happy? It made me happy to see that you have it.
And you should definitely be happy about your garden! I can’t join your garden posts for quite a while, still buried in snow here.
And I am happy you turned your comments back on, even though I am hardly on the computer at all these days, and get so behind with blog friends… Also you posted a picture of your kitchen sink one day and I couldn’t say anything!
<3 <3
I thought maybe Beatrix was imitating a fox? (Just a little creepy – but so like one of my daughter’s that I have to laugh!)
He is very cute – I try to forget they would snatch up a beloved kitty in a trice.
That is a beautiful fox! And I never knew your compost was so neatly divided…impressive.
We had a fox that used to visit our compost. He really chowed down on old pumpkins. It was right outside our window and he would stay for a good amount of time. We really enjoyed him/her. Ours was a gray fox, yours is a red fox. Happy Birthday Larkspur!! We have a birthday boy turning 6 on the 12th.
Foxes are so beautiful, and it’s good you don’t have chickens for them to hassle so you can just enjoy their presence. Lark’s sweater is very pretty by the way, especially the yellow.
