My girls took turns running through the sprinkler, and I wondered if this would be the last time this year.
I discovered dill in my garden, about two months too late.
The first of my fall sunflowers bloomed.
Beatrix practiced her soccer moves with Trudy at her heels (and with her dress between Trudy’s teeth?!)
Head butting proved to be Bea’s specialty.
My oldest four took numerous expeditions into the woods searching for abandoned hornet’s nests. One afternoon, they came home with quite a prize.
Keats climbed a little too high and required a rescue.
The first chestnuts were discovered,
gathered,
and roasted by happy children.
Sumac berries were also gathered, gently rubbed, and then soaked in cool water for about fifteen minutes.
The resulting sumac “lemonade” was filtered, sweetened, and drunk by my children who love discovering ways to use edible plants.
A beautifully illustrated new edition of an old favorite was read over and over.
I was reminded of the source of my love for this book; a small wooden box from my mother’s childhood to which she glued a page cut from her own copy of Little Red Riding Hood.
I received beautiful yarn for lots of upcoming cozy fall and winter knitting projects, and was reminded of one of the reasons why my sewing machine is gathering dust right now. Fall knitting fever has hit.
I watched the light change, felt the air shift, and I welcomed both.
