The living room that hosted our bed for years has been sitting mostly unused ever since we moved back upstairs. Meahwhile, my sewing machine has been wanting a permanent home. When I saw this big old desk for cheap at the thrift store, I came up with a plan: a very good plan. Jonny hasn’t had the time to finish my studio space in the other little dwelling on our property, nor is it high on the priority list right now. I had not considered using this living area as a studio space because it is the room you enter when you walk in our front door. But hey, if we managed using that room as a bedroom for all those years, having it host my sewing projects has got to be a step up. I have slowly been letting go of all notions of ever living in a conventional way or trying to appear as if we do. Jonny and I just aren’t cut out for that. Sharing a small house with five children requires using spaces in the way that best serves our family.
Whoever owned the desk before had sanded the finish off of most of it, leaving the top with a shabby (in the best way) coat of pale yellow paint. It’s all solid wood, and I love it just how it is. It suits my needs perfectly. There is even a shelf under the desk. I have started shifting my craft books from other places in the house to this spot. And, the drawers are so deep that even my yarn swift can slide easily into one of them. I don’t mind the fact that there are handles missing from those drawers.
Larkspur made sure I had fresh flowers for my desk the very first day.
Today I was actually able to sit down and quickly sew Beatrix another pair of Hammer pants, something that wouldn’t have happened before the wonderful desk entered my life. There was no lugging the sewing machine out, or laying out my cutting mat. Everything was out and waiting.
Next week I will have those pants to share (they are very cute!) and that sweater you’ve been getting peeks at over the past couple of weeks.
